The lack of proof is proof.
Anyone remember chain-letters? I mean, an actual letter in the mail - chain letter. I do.
Now those same letters (or other garbage) travel with a clickity-click on the keyboard/mouse - and at the speed of electrons in wires or through the air. No postage - or responsibility for basic logic - needed.

Then there's Bigfoot and the TV show that always ends with, "We almost saw him this time." People tune in for that crap every week in hope that it is real. How many years has that show been on?

Bigfoot is a good example of how to test a conspiracy theory. Questions I ask myself: Why is the level of evidence always hovering around the same point, despite it being a rather large creature in an area that gets explored fairly often? Is there a reason why the collection of evidence never grows or shrinks? If someone is covering it up, what is their motivation? Is the hypothesis falsifiable?
Flat earth is also a good example of the psychology... they see something that seems smart so it fires some neurons, and they get addicted to that feeling like they've cracked some code. Maybe some piece of "evidence" is held up that feels irrefutable even if it is far from conclusive. I was talking about the A-432 stuff from several years ago with a friend a little while ago. Remember that? That using 432hz as a reference pitch was going to be in tune with the planet and all of nature and be better for life as we know it, and A-440 is toxic? It won a lot of people over because dropping the tuning of a song makes it a bit warmer and more pleasant to many ears. Has nothing to do with helping your body fight free radicals. But when information is presented the right way and it rhymes with our own experience, it can just "feel" right.
On the other hand, things such as germ theory and heliocentrism probably seemed like "conspiracy theories" at some point. If any one of us made a list of a hundred "conspiracy theories" that we laugh at, probably two or three of them will turn out ot be true.

One might wonder, even though they can’t seem to get a well defined look at a live Big Foot … you might ask why are we not finding skeletal remains.

Right, and with the size of the creature, you'd at least get a steaming pile of droppings.
Bigfoot actually isn't all that implausible. Chimpanzees, gorillas and orangutans all exist, as do giraffes, elephants and hippos, all pretty bizarre creatures when you think about it. Another large primate in the Americas is totally believable. It is that the evidence never passes above sketchy, and there is never an explanation why they're so hard to find.

It is that the evidence never passes above sketchy, and there is never an explanation why they're so hard to find. It's because they are super natural and live in both the 3rd and 4th dimension. Gee I thought there were smart people here. Phfffttttt.

Yeah, a brother in law. The world is flat and they’ve been lying to us. Doesn’t matter if you tell them then how do you explain ships disappearing over the horizon and flying in a plane how there is a curve to the atmosphere and the land and if there is a ship that gets near the edge do they just fall off. Doesn’t matter what you say he claims he has a reason but will have to get together sometime and he will explain. I do not waste my time. j Everything it seems has a conspiracy. Oh and the weirdest some subscribe to is we are actually part of a computer simulation and every once in a while there is a glitch. Give me a break 😂 I can prove, unequivocally, that the world is not flat. How? If the world were flat, cats would have pushed everything off of it by now.

I think social media exacerbates the whole conspiracy theory situation. The nature of the algorithms is such that a confirmation bias chamber is built specially-tailored for you. Critical thinking is out the window when folks enter into the echo chamber. We’re fed what keeps us focused on the screen. Absolutely. It also feeds all kinds of outrageous thinking by creating the illusion that pretty much everybody agrees with you. Throw in foreign governments using it to sew discontent and drive their agendas and it's a messerschmidt of crapola.

What's more is this: if someone had actually discovered proof of bigfoot, it would be huge news. It's not like they're gonna break that news on the show 6 months later. Same with that Oak Island show....every episode they make some sort of big find, complete with a shocked face, gasp and....commercial break. The video version of click bait. Yet people watch that show without fail.

The birds aren't real stuff is a joke, started by a guy to make fun of the conspiracy theory people. Saw an interview with him where he went into character...absolutely hilarious.

I know a guy, early 70s, trust fund all his life, so he's had plenty of time to develop paranoias about threats to his wealth. He is a conspiracy snob, the more arcane and obscure the better. The regular run of the mill stories are trash for the rubes. He prefers artisanal cabals that are only accessible to those really in the know.

A lot of the conspiracy guys from 2020 are looking a lot better these days. Just sayin' I say they are not looking better. All that wasn’t some covert evil plan. It was ignorance and bad decisions. And now the data show just how bad. Ask an epidemiologist if he could, would he/she shut down an economy to save 1000 lives.

I was just searching the inner-webs for lyrics to a Dire Straits song.
On at least one location an entire verse just disappeared. It’s just gone.
Clear evidence music is being eliminated one verse at a time.
They will move slowly on this one least we notice.

It's also some kind of evil world-wide conspiracy when they "claim" their shake machine is being cleaned or is broken. It happens way too often to be a coincidence. There must be malice behind it coming from the top.

I remember when Mikey died when his stomach exploded from eating to many moon rocks.
What the difference between a conspiracy theory and urban legends? I think Mikey is an urban legend.

I just listened to the song on Spotify and the verse I think you're talking about is still there. I think it's more a case of some lyric sites not wanting to publish that particular "F" word on their site, not a concerted effort to eliminate music.

Exactly right, Mikey (or Bigfoot) are not conspiracy theories. If you think that the government assassinated Mikey with Pop Rocks or that Bigfoots were created in a lab experiment and got loose and it’s all been covered up, those would be conspiracy theories.

Totally plausible that a) some would believe it and b) some would believe that there are believers. People embrace crazier things. If you factor plot lines of popular movies over the decades that have conspiratorial themes I think Hollywood has been grooming the masses for conspiracy theories. 🤔 hmmmm, I have a theory...😂

I think a lot of conspiracy theories get floated out by people who have the same kind of mind-kink as an arsonist. Light it, stand back and watch it spread. The real hazard with that practice is the boy-who-cried-wolf reflex. The truth, or a kernel of it, can go up in the flames of deceit.
