Chris, I agree that the ML style stylus shape makes an audible difference. All my previous pickups have this style. But there's more to it.
I don't know why AT would discontinue the 440MLa which was *very* popular and highly regarded. I assume it was not cost effective and they had to cut corners on the new series.

Seems many popular cartridges have been discontinued. I can only guess labor costs were too much and cheaper labor did not work, I think that was Shure's demise path.

Most of A-T's stuff is made in Japan.

Like NSR, I'm also using an AT cartridge.. On a Linn LP12:

Very nice Ricardo. I see you moved on from the ARO tonearm -- or is this a second turntable?

Much as I loved the Aro, when I had my previous cartridge (the Kandid) it was obvious that it was holding back its performance compared to the Ekos SE. It was the first cartridge where I felt that to be the case.
At that point I replaced Keel/A and Aro with the regular Keel and the SE. They also worked very well with the ART1000 (which I did listen to originally on an Aro), so happy with the move even if on occasion wish I had kept the Aro for a second system as it’s just such a lovely design.

So you're even beyond a full spec Klimax with the ART1000 -- you must have a very understanding significant other.
Very, very nice.

I love vinyl and own a couple of vintage LPs, but currently I don't own a fancy turntable. As a matter of fact I don't even spin them too often in my cheapo Chinese made one, I am afraid it might even wear my records. I'm planning on getting a decent hi fi system for me, but that costs some Money and I've got a couple of projects going that are priorities. Here are some of my new and old vinyl records:

Nice stuff, Ricardo. We do not play in the same league. Always liked Linn, could never justify the $.

NSW, coincidentally, on Hoffman's audio forum there is a thread where someone was bitching about the 440 being to brittle and shrill and got rid of his for a 540. And so it goes... ;o)

Bottom line is these are entry level carts. I'm not really surprised that there are inconsistencies. I remounted the 540 from scratch -- removed the tonearm, unbolted the cart and measured the overhang and got the cart generally square in the headshell. Re-installed the tonearm and checked VTA and checked alignment with a gauge. Reset the stylus force verified with a scale. The only thing I couldn't nail is anti skate because I don't have a test record -- I'm assuming the AS on my tonearm is in the ballpark.
I played "Zarzuelas" with Montserrat Caballé and she sounded pretty good. Which means nothing since I didn't play the same record before I remounted the 540. Anyway, now that I know for sure it is mounted correctly, I'll give it another week or so to settle in. In the meantime, I found a Linn dealer in Michigan that had a replacement stylus for the Adikt in stock -- so it's on the way.

I’m old school. I have a Dual 1237 with an Ortofon Super OM10 cartridge. Duals came with Ortofons installed as OEM. Ortofon is still in business. The Dual is belt drive and a competent performer.

Yeah -- Overture-Audio. I talked to TJ and he called the UPS guy back so it could ship yesterday. I'll have it by Friday.
They seem like a good outfit -- he said they have a very healthy Linn community out there.

They are highly regarded. Thomas O’Keefe is probably the top guy in the US for LP12s. If I didn’t have my relationship with Cymbiosis they are who I would go to for this stuff.

"Would love to see a photo or two of your set-up."
This is what an early model LP12 looks like before Ricardo gets his hands on it. After remounting the 540 and giving the LP12 a small tweak to get the "bounce" perfect, it sounds much better. Not sure what made the difference --the only thing I consciously changed was the VTA. I'll probably leave the 540 in the LP12 and maybe put the Adikt in the other table when the new stylus gets here.
I haven't set up a Flickr account yet -- so click to enbiggen the photo:

Rega P1 I bought 10 years ago. Didn’t get much use until this past year I was able to set up a man cave/music room. Once I added a proper phono preamp and fitted a Shure M97ED cartridge, then added a small NAD amp and new PSB speakers, it came into it’s own more. To my great delight, from an audio forum I learned about tweaks and upgrade parts and have been pursuing that path to maximise the performance, tinkering, a thing I enjoy. But must keep it within financial limits of course. Last night listened to Muddy Waters “Fathers and Sons”, McCoy Tyner, Electric Flag, side 4 of Chicago II, and a favourite, Rahsaan Roland Kirk “Case of the 3 Sided Dream in Audio Colour”, amongst others.

Sounds like a nice rig OTH.
I'd heard of Rahsaan Roland Kirk but never really looked into what he was doing. I took a trip down the Yewtube rabbit hole to check him out and I'm surprised he's not better known -- he was quite a talent. Thanks for the heads up -- I'll be keeping an eye out for some of his stuff.

Lot's of nice tables here folks!
I'm always tempted to get something newer than my Empire 698, but my guess is I'd not find a big sonic improvement.
The Empire had rock solid speed stability & also deals really well with warped records and my Shure cartridges work well with it.
