Just listened to the album on YouTube while doing my expense report. Have always really liked this one, truly superior. I watched a documentary on the making if this that was pretty interesting. At one point one of the band said they would spend 3 hours learning and rehearsing, then take lunch. Said he would go to lunch convinced the songs would never make the album, then they would come back and nail it. Anyway, aja on YouTube today. Quality ain't an issue working in the next room.

It's not my favorite Steely Dan album but "Josie" is one of their greatest songs. All my Steely Dan records are in regular rotation.
These guys are too musically sophisticated for many people. I'll never forget a friend of my wife back in college who was over for dinner. I had a Steely Dan album playing when she blurted out, "Don't you have anything good?" I never liked her after that. ;o)

Not my favorite either -- if I had to pick it would be "Katy Lied", "Royal Scam", then "Aja" followed by "Can't Buy a Thrill".

I like all of them but Royal Scam and Two Against Nature seem to top my list. I only have Two Against Nature on CD. It was sent to me shortly after it was released by a guy on the FDP named Doc540 IIRC. He thought it sucked.

I have yet to listen to a SD recording I don't like. You don't hear many bar bands playing their stuff, and there's a reason for that. We've pulled out a few of their tunes at jams, and they are always a real blast to play--especially with a kickin' drummer and bass player.

SD records all had high-quality sound. That carried over to the first Donald Fagen solo album, The Nightfly.
I once suggested on the old FDP that punk was a reaction to Steely Dan, but someone else said it was prog-rock they were reacting against. Still, it might be difficult for a punk band to pull off a Steely Dan tune.
