In my never ending search for cool music, I'm having a lot of fun in collecting and listening to bands that released a single album, maybe toured over it and that was that. There are some JEWELS out there, some cats that could have gone quite far, if it wasn't for the circumstances... I'll post them here for you all to enjoy them too. Here's Road, a gig that Noel Redding did in L.A. with Rod Richards and Leslie Sampson in 1970, released in 1972. Here's a 1975 album, which is a killer Record! These guys from Minnesota are a damned good power trio. Another very good one I've listened to, Pugsley Munion

That is some good stuff!
Like you say, there is a huge number of bands that did one record and fizzled. One of my favorites is from the early 90s by a band from Boston called The Joneses (not the later hairband of the same name).
The Joneses were like a modern Bad Company/Free/early Whitesnake with killer vocals and chops to match. They could've been huge but their timing couldn't have been worse: they tried to break just as the grunge scene was taking off. Vocalist Dave Finnerty is a hard rock belter and you can hear the years of whisky and cigarettes in his voice. Guitarist Billy Loosigian perfectly nails the roar of a Les Paul through a Marshall on 10. He's also a riff machine par excellence, and every song is full of wonderful licks, fills, and breaks. I've stolen a lot from this record.
Their one LP, 'Hard', is all original tunes and roller-coaster ride the entire way; there isn't a bad tune in the bunch. I put this record on equal footing with the first Montrose record and Van Halen I and II...one of the best hard rock records ever made. Billy still plays in and around Boston in several bands. Here's their full record on YouTube. Turn up the volume and grab hold of something solid:
