In 1988, I got an Eric Clapton Strat for my 40th birthday! It was my only electric for a few years and got a lot of playing time in it. The Lace Sensors were ok and the boost circuit boosted noise as well. As time went on and more guitars found their way into my "collection", the Eric fell out of favor. Last time I played it, the pots were noisy as hell and the tone control made a loud pop when turned to halfway. So I've decided it's time to get ole Eric back into the rotation. I contacted a local guy who is going to install Lindy Fralin split blade pickups and all new pots and wiring. Should be ready in a week or two. Will it regain it's position as # 1? Maybe not, but it will see more playing time rather than being a wall hanging.

Good for you. I hate having an instrument that I won't play due to a technical issue. I hope it returns to it's #1 status. Even if briefly. There's something special about reviving an old friend like that.

Just placed the order. Discussed with George, the tech guy, about the pickup covers. My pickguard is bright white but the Fralin covers are an "antique" white. Close, but.... I decided on black pickup covers and I'll get white knobs and switch to go with it. The black on white will look pretty cool, I think.

That does look good if you're not into "vintage-correct" appearances. Which I'm not either ) While the tech has it, ask him to check for high frets. Guitars this old usually need a tweak even though the frets might not be worn. Doing this can transform a good guitar into a really great one.

I am going to have him go over the entire guitar, including the frets, to make this guitar the most playable it can be.

It's done! With the new exotic pickguard, it looks like a new guitar. The Lindy Fralin Split Blade pickups sound amazing (https://www.fralinpickups.com/product/strat-split-blade/). Real Strat sound and no noise/buzz/hum!!! Just what I was looking for. Unconventional appearance, but this whole guitar is unconventional. Nice work by George at The Band Station.

Playing very well, indeed. Still amazed at those Fralin pickups. Even at high gain amp settings, no hum/buzz.

But the sounds are amazing. I don't get the quack - but the Lace sensors I replaced didn't have that either. They don't sound thin at all. Chimey or glassy I'd call it. No matter what selector position, you get a pure Strat sound. Add some grit from your amp/pedal without getting all the buzz and hum. That's exactly what i was looking for.
