I have used a EV N/D-357 super cardioid mic for well over 25 years. It's a great mic, and suits my voice really well.
It still works, but the tapered plastic sleeve (poly???) that forms the "holding part" has perished.
EV's idea was for this to reduced handling noise, but it's a really poor construction method.
I was fortunate enough that EV provided me with a free replacement sleeve about 10 years ago, but the second one has now gone the way of the original. This mic is no longer in production and I doubt EV would be as generous nowadays.
I have half-arsed fixed the 357. Whilst the fix is practical, it looks pretty crap.
Sooooo... I'm looking for a new mic that won't break the bank and provide good performance. FTR, I've got some old SM-58's but don't really like them as my main vocal mic and the BETA models are more than I want to spend (here). I do tend to like hyper or super cardioid.
One option I've looked at is the Sennheiser e845. Seems to get good reviews.
Any suggestions?

My last band used standard cardioid e835s, which I liked better than SM58s. On that basis, I would guess that you might like the e845.

At a glance the Shure betas don't seem to be priced outrageously different than others mentioned here. Is it a down under thing? I have both the beta 57 and 58 and like them for stage vocal mics.

Thanks for the replies everyone.
I ended up pulling the trigger on AKG D5. It came as a suggestion in another forum and gets good user reviews. It has similar specs to the EV (fwtw) and is a super cardioid as well as being within my budget.
Peegoo - What I didn't mention earlier is that the little plastic ring/spacer that sits between the two halves of the wind screen, also perished a bout 5 years ago. When I contacted EV about it (several emails) and got no reply, I pretty much wrote them off at that point.
Larry - The Beta 58's are $250AU, which isn't a huge amount of money, but more than I was looking to spend right now. (the D5 was $150). Also, now brace yourself, I'm just not a fan of SM-58's (at least for my voice). Admittedly I haven't used the beta's, and despite being the industry standard, I just wasn't open to the idea.

Shure SM58's I am not a big fan BUT ..the Beta-58A is my go to for my voice this is the only mic I use. I have tried others but this one (for me) is so far the best one. Rock solid built (its a Shure so of course) and no issues with any board i plug it into. It runs a little hotter than other mics so i just turn the gain down some. vocally it cuts thru the mix for me
Used to use a Peavey PVM 22 for many years then I had an opportunity to try the Beta58a YMMV due to your voice, timber and range

I love the e835. I used to use that wired and now have a wireless one. I got to try all the top brands and in a blind test at a local high end PA shop everybody there all thought the e835 was best for my voice. The AKG D5 is very similar to the e835 in my opinion.

Thanks jdawg. I received my AKG D5 the other day but haven't a proper chance to give it run. Rehearsal was postponed until next week, so we'll see then!
