Band name alert: Maryanne, Maple & Dave. Doesn't even have to be a trio. No... Ginger, maple and Dave 😂

They could have both singers in band at the same time and do cover versions of "Hold On, I'm Comin'" and "Soul Man."
Play it, Ed!

Maryanne, Ginger or Ginger?
(That's Ginger from "Gilligan" or Ginger Baker, BTW)

While Eddie was a beast on those first three albums, I appreciated Sammy's 'musicality' that he brought to the band and the change in songwriting... I still love "Romeo Delight", "Hang 'em High" and a lot of the uptempo stuff, but some of Dave's lyrics were also kinda dumb.
And Sammy could hit the notes live...
Here's Vai and Billy Sheehen doing their darndest to play "Ain't Talkin' Bout Love" on the first DLR tour, and Dave is hardly singing at all!

"but for me the first Montrose album is one of the greatest rock albums of all time."
+1. Not a weak song on the rekkid.
Rock the Nation is easily in my list of Ten Best Rock Tunes Evar.

Seen them with both versions. There were songs from the DLR era that just didn't sound right with Sammy singing them. There were some good VH tunes during the time with Sammy, but you just can't beat the VH classics.

Went to see Montrose and Journey at the Tower Theater in 78. The opening band was Van Halen. I still remember everyone looking at each other like WTF did we just see. Montrose and Journey were great but VH was what everyone was talking about

Sammy was okay with VH but was awesome with Chickenfoot.

And that said, I prefer the original band. The vocals seem to be more varied, and have depth than when Sammy was in the band. There are highs and lows with both singers. For example, one of my favorite songs with Sammy was Humans Being.

I was the biggest Van Halen fan at one point. Album wise Fairwarning is Dave and Eddie at the peak of their abilities IMHO. Sammy is by far a better singer. When the band broke up both "5150" and "Eat em and Smile" were monster recordings. I think in that moment DLR by picking astronomical players took it to another level. Van Halen with Hagar became more mainstream and less risky.
So back in the day Dave.
Currently Sammy is going out with that elder statesman vibe that we all like to see. Dave is clinging to relevance like a good looking woman going under the knife to regain some past beauty........and failing miserably.

Gary Cherrone!!! But actually its Dave, Dave, and lastly, Dave Those first few years of the band were as good as rock n roll ever was. Sammy brought some new energy, but the ' only 3 DLR era songs' rule and musical direction of the Sammy era didn't hold my attention.
