Having sold off all my basses and amps in the teens, I am in the market for a lightweight combo amp to mate with a CIJ Mustang bass I recently purchased on Reverb.
I would appreciate thoughts, opinions and experiences with respect to differences between the Fender Rumble 500 and Rumble Stage 800 amps. Also any other lightweight combos or separate amps/cabs that fall within the price range of these Fenders ($600/$900 new) that could be superior to the Fenders is appreciated as well.

Look at the Gallien Kreuger MB bass combo series. I have an MB112 (1x12 200 watts); it is small, lightweight, and way louder and punchier than its size will have you believe. Class D power and a neo speaker. It works great for small-to-medium clubs all by itself unless you're playing metal, and it also has a line out for reinforcement to the FOH.

I always wanted to purchase an SWR Redhead combo but was always outbid on EBay so never managed to own one. If needing a combo today I would still look for a used Redhead.

Thanks for your thoughts Peegoo and Laker. I looked on Reverb and several Redheads are for sale. None of the listings reference a weight. Are they a heavy combo, or relatively lightweight?

I play a Rumble 500 and like it a lot. I played through the Rumble 200 at a club not too long ago, and I was dismayed to find that I *might have* liked the tone of the 200 just a little better than the 500. Someone who understands wattage could tell you if a 200 could hang with a band as well as the 500 (the club with the 200 was using the line out).
I had a Fender Bassman 250 2x10 combo that sounded totally cool, was plenty loud, and had great tone-shaping, but it was heavy and difficult to readjust the eq for different basses (too many options for me, like contour and room balance in addition to the four-band eq, treble, bass, and compression). came in both a combo and head version.

Lots of amps. Markbass, GallienKrueger (GK), Mesa, Aguilar. etc. As to combos. specifically, the Markbass combos are excellent, in sound, quality build, etc. The few rumbulls I have played were distictly muddy in tone, to me. YMMV. I like great FRFR tone from my amp, and from there I can alter things if I want to.

I've used a GK MB112 amp for several years. And as Peegoo said, it's very loud for its size. One feature I like is the ability to daisy chain GK powered cabinets for larger venues.

tmc, my thoughts exactly; although difficult to find anyone selling the MB112 online now, and the MBP112 extension is even harder to locate.

Tough to beat a Rumble 500 Combo. Although you could run a Studio 40 through it, via the FX out and have the Redhead, and the SVT, and the GK, and a bunch of different Fender amps. Just sayin'. ;-)
