Have to admit this was before my time and I don't think I'd heard of him until I stumbled upon him on the interwebnet thing.
Apparently once touted as the voice of the New Yardbirds/Led Zep or the new voice of Deep Purple and described in the contemporary music press as the third British thing along with the Beatles and the Stones.
Bad choices; bad management etc?

Should've been HUGE.
Like Steve Marriott, he had amazing vocal range and power and he knew how to front a band.

Tastes vary: I saw him live twice opening for bigger names during the late 1960s and had a very "meh..." reaction.
Just not my cup of tea, for whatever reason.

He still resonated with future musicians. Cheap Trick and Raconteurs, to name a couple.

I became aware of him because my college roommate had a couple of his albums. Saw him open a show with BB King and The Rolling Stones in 1969 and thought he was great. I knew about the New Yardbirds/Zep thing. Apparently he thought his solo career was going well and chose not to join. He never hit the expected heights but apparently managed to have a decent career.
