I'll have seconds!
With butter and a little salt and pepper.
Also good with a little grated cheddar or Parmesan cheese stirred in.
If you have left-over grits, put some wax paper into a 9x9 pan and press the grits down into the pan and refrigerate. Next morning, slice the chilled grits into ~2" squares like brownies, and brown them in butter in a covered skillet on medium heat until the outsides are golden brown and crisp. Fried grits, baby!

I got a taste for them while in the Navy. Although I like mine a bit thicker, made with 1/2 milk, 1/2 water. Make a milk moat, crater and add honey or maple syrup. Enjoy!

Haven't had 'em since I was last in Florida, but liked 'em then.
"Country potatoes" (grilled potato chunks) is more the standard, breakfast side dish here on the left coast.

Love the real thing. That would not be the instant varieties. You want stone ground from a mill in the South. They should taste of corn, and need nothing but butter and salt.

Grits for breakfast with fried eggs and country ham -- yes. South Carolina shrimp and grits for supper -- hells yeah. SC shrimp and grits with a brown Tasso based gravy! Best i have had were in Charleston at Fleet Landing restaurant in the historic district as they say in the menu: Charleston Shrimp & Grits- Jumbo Shrimp & Andouille Sausage Sautéed in a Tasso Ham Gravy over Creamy Grits I thought the only grits were the Cracker barrel soupy tasteless stuff until I had the real deal! well worth the time and effort to find the good stuff and give em a try

Good thick grits (you should be able to eat them with a fork), a little butter, salt and pepper.

The Italian version of grits is polenta which is made from yellow corn opposed to white. An Italian friend says his father used to refuse to eat polenta saying it was poor peoples' food.

I eat grits often either sweet with berries or salty with a poached egg. grits and polenta are really two different ground corn meals. polenta is plain ground corn (as used for corn bread) - grits are made from hominy which is corn that has been soaked in a lye or lime solution (nixtamalized) this was/is well known to native Americans who found this made the corn more digestible. It is prepared similar to central American maza harina that tortillas are made from. Its a primary food for those folks and they have found how to make the most out of it.
Grits go down very similar to cream of wheat. I like both but the grits have a little more flavor of their own. When the subject comes up I get the feeling that those who say they don't like them have either never been served a properly prepared serving or just do not like the sound of the name.

I always get them when I’m on vacation down south. The cheese laden version is especially delicious, but the butter, salt & pepper version are nice too.
They don’t exist here, really. I’m sure some diners offer them, and if you order them, it’s probably the instant version.
