Love grits and prefer them to oatmeal.
Stone ground yellow grits with butter, salt and pepper are my favorite.
Grits, like everything else, are also good with homemade gravy.

So they sell hominy grits in cans in the Mexican food section here. How are they different?

Try Palmetto Farms artisan stone ground yellow (or white ) grits. A bit pricey on Amazon but your shrimp and grits or your cheese grits recipe Will never be the same.

Savory not sweet. Julia child had a recipe, make the grits, put 2/3 of the shredded cheese in them with an egg and some cream, turn that into a buttered dish, top with the remaining cheese and bake like mac and cheese.

First had grits on trip to Fla. many years ago. Seem like thick Farina to me. Hard to find in Restaurants here in NJ. Oh I did like the Cheese Grits... a whole lot. Lets not mention that they are healthy eats too.

For me, it's grits with shrimp sauteed in butter and a touch of bacon.

I've tried them once. It's one of those foods that you really need to add other stuff to make it actually taste good. It sort of reminded me or Farina which by itself is bland. Add some sugar, some bacon with cheese and an egg on top and now you're cooking.

I've never seen grits in a can. Are you sure it's grits and not just hominy which is the main ingredient of the Mexican soup Posole?

You say grits, I say polenta. Pretty much the same thing. Love them both but you can't make me eat corn meal mush because it sounds bad in any language.

*Grits are not Polenta. *Grits do not come in a can. *Grits are not mushy cornbread. *No self respecting Southerner uses instant grits. Yes, the entirety of my grit knowledge is from My Cousin Vinny. “DID YOU SAY YOU’RE A FAST COOK???”
