I just sold my dsl 20 head and 2x12 cab so I know it sounds good. Anyone have experience with the Origen? Or other amps in the same price range..tubes?

This Origin series is more a pedal platform and can do the old-school Marshall OD somewhat. They're pretty cool in that regard.
If you like the old JTM-ish tones, the PRS HDRX 20 head does that thing quite well. I think those are around the price range you're looking at. I've got one and I love it.

I need a combo. I think the PRS combo is 70 watts with no effects loop for a volume box. it seems like a good alternative at a good price. thanks Leftee!
Know anything about the Sonzera? A used one might be in my price range. id be worried the HDRX at 70 watts would be to loud for my house. No more playing out for me.

I’ll put forward an outstanding hybrid. www.koch-amps.com/guitar-combo-jupiter.htmlI have a Jupiter Junior (20w 1x10”). These sound/play very nicely. And you don’t have the weight of a tube amp. Mine sounds excellent at low volumes, too.

Leftee, where did you buy the Koch amp? They are hard to find. I’ve seen one at musicians friend. I looked again and it’s back ordered.

I found my Junior on Reverb. That’s the one I could have afforded. Dang. I’ll probably keep looking.

Oh, what a quandry! Ha! I can’t find anything (either the Koch or PRS).
Really trying to keep it to $500 including tax and shipping. For a combo.
Any other ideas?

A nice used Marshall DSL15C might be in your wheelhouse. I’ve got one and it does the Marshall lineup well. It probably has more gain on tap than you’d use… but there’s nothing saying you have to use it.

Good idea Leftee. How does it do clean although I have that covered with a fender amp?
Does it sound boxy at all? I really like headroom.

The clean (green) channel has its own gain control. So you can set it up very clean. The Ultra channel also has its own gain.
You can actually dime the gain on the clean channel and get into Plexi territory.
There are actually a wide range of tones available from these, and the DSL line in general.

Thanks again, Leftee. I’ve been listening to some PRS Sonzera 20 watt tube combos. They sound real good. I can get a used one in my price range.
im still looking for a dsl 15 or 20 in my price range. Thanks for your suggestions.

I had a DSL20 head and I like the 15 more.
I read up on the Sonzera, and it seems a pretty sweet amp.
Not that I need another amp.

Well, I found a great deal on the PRS Sonzera 20 combo at Sam Ash and bought it. It’s used and in great shape. Free Shipping. Now I’m wondering if I should buy two years worth of protection for $79.
I’ll report back when it arrives. Tracking hasn’t started so I don’t have a date yet.
Oh boy, something different although it is still a tube amp. Thanks again Leftee!!

Saw this thread late - for "home" and recording - the DSL1 is stupid good. I've loved mine since I got it. Admittedly, I dod the head/1x12 combo as I am not a fan of ANY 10" speaker...but....if the PRS doesn't scratch that itch, the "1w" tube Marshall does the DSL thing VERY well and the 'clean' channel does a pretty decent Pexi breakup. It still gets loud enough that ..if I was an apartment dweller still people would get angry.

Thanks Rob. I like to hear about them. Isn’t there a 5 watt also. I’m always leary, of the smaller amps sounding boxy…and I really don’t like that.

There is a DSL5 and it is a great little amp. I have one and it benefited from a speaker swap. Mine now has a Celestion V10 (think… V30 but 10”) and it sounds great.
As for boxy, I think the amp represents itself well for its size. Usually boxy is the function of width/height/depth of the cab. Or, put another way, the distance between the front of the speaker and the back.
One of the best examples (that is, worst boxy-sounding combos) was the Carvin Vintage 16. It was a fantastic amp and sported a decent 12” speaker all stuffed into a cabinet that was too small/shallow.

Thanks again.
I can't believe how much a new dsl 5 costs...$100 less than the 20 at $799.
Well, if the PRS doesn't work out for me I have a couple of Marshall's to check out.
Nothing wrong with TOO MANY Marshalls!

Marshall prices have shot up over the last couple years. The DSL5 used to be $499/new not so long ago.
I've watched some Sonzera videos (including a couple Sonzera/HDRX20 comparos) and it is a great sounding amp.
But I don't *need* any more amps. 😜

I’ve got a DSL1 Anniversary head that puts out a whopping 1.5w into 16 Ohms. I have the 1x10 cabs from and old Lead 12 stack and I installed 8 Ohm Greenbacks (10”) in them. I made a series wiring harness to plug those into the head. 😂
The head actually drops to 1w into 8 Ohms. That’s why I did what I did.
It’s a fun thing.

It’s a fun thing. 20 years ago I never would have believed you could have used..the preamp tubes for power, let alone have it sound so damn right. But..hearing is believing. It scratched my terrible "need a Marshall" that I'd never had - I would HATE one as my ONLY amp (there i'm a "must have 6l6ish Fender clean as a baseline" guy) - but stacking the Marshall with that on demand is glorious. I got hooked into it by the remarkably good Plexi in the Eleven Rack.
