My new Ibanez TMB30 has rekindled my love of the 30" scale bass guitar. Over the years I've owned a Gibson EB-0 and a DeArmond Starfire and now the TMB30. I doubt I'll ever go back to 34" scale. The shorty is just easier to play and sounds great. If it's good enough for McCartney, Bruce and Cassady it's more than good enough for me!

Shorties are all I'm playing right now and the Guild Starfire, with it's narrow nut and string spacing, is my favorite. Love the sound strung with flats and it seems to go easiest on my arthritic thumbs.

I like them. Built two 30 inchers, one made out of homedepot pine. My first bass is a short scale, bran new in 1965, a few years ago I purchased a Guild Starfire, which is seeing more gig time than the old Precision
Home Depot pine lightly roasted “o)

I've been a shortscale aficianado for years now and have around a half dozen of them . A Dano Longhorn was responsible for me switching , fell in love with the cheap little thing and it became my favourite bass . Right now I'm mostly playing a Gibson , the Les Paul Jr DC bass . Gibson really do make basses . The Jr is a beauty .

The DC Jr has the pickup in the sweet spot instead of by the end of the fretboard . Sounds great , also has a coil tap .

I have played some Ibanez short scales that felt really good. I like them as I don't really need a 34" scale but that is what I have now and used to them.

Play a Teisco Short scale as my "round the house" player but when playing in public with the various bands always use the long scale. Nothing is better than hitting the low open E on the long scale Playing the long scale while sitting causes a shoulder problem, due to having to reach so far. Dont have the problem with the shortscales.

I have two nice basses: a Lakland P Bass clone (standard scale) and a Gretsch Junior Jet I shorty. I play the Gretsch a lot more because it's easier for me as a non-bass player. And my technique is so terrible that I have TI flats on it to keep finger noise to a minimum. But it sounds fantastic and records really well, it's a lot of fun to play, and it fits into a standard guitar gig bag. This:

My first bass was a Fender Musicmaster. It was a great bridge from guitar to bass. Then I bought a G&L SB2 and never looked back. Did buy a Beetle Bass copy that I had fun with for awhile. I still have TI Flats on all my basses. Love the feel and sound.

Yeah, the dark side has it lure. I was snagged way back in the early 60s. My shortest scale bass is a 20” fretless, made on a cigarbox, takes a few minutes to get the intonation nailed when you first start playing it.

I just never felt the love for a short scale bass as the string tension always feels floppy to me. One of the reasons I really like my 55-94 Lakland is the 35 inch scale giving a tight, responsive low B string where many fivers lean towards a floppy B.

Yeah, but you have a fretless 20 inch scale cigarbox too “o)

Yeah, but you have a fretless 20 inch scale cigarbox too “o) Yes, it’s a cute little thing in need of some better strings.

Last set I put on are the Aquila Thundergut white. They seem less tacky than the Pahoehoe strings.

Last set I put on are the Aquila Thundergut white. They seem less tacky than the Pahoehoe strings. The Aquila strings are violin tuning, backwards from bass. Do you order by string size or is there a short-scale bass set?

Yeah, I just checked, but it doesn’t make sense, they may have different sets, These strings are made for the Kala U-Bass a 20” scale bass. They are direct replacements for the Pahoehoe strings from Qwen Holt, it was these strings that I based the Cigarbox bass on after getting rid of my Ashbory because of the frequent failure of the silicone strings. Aquila does make violin strings, thundergut may be what they are calling this line of string material. Better price

Magnetic or piezo pickup on the cigar box ? I have Thunderguts on my Ashbory , they've held up without any issues .

Piezo,
I wish I still had the Ashbory. Those silicone strings were making me crazy. I traded it for a ukulele, the Flea, from Flea Market Music, I meet Owen Holt on a ukulele forum and he told me about his Pahoehoe poly strings. I decided at that time to make the cigarbox bass.

That's a nice looking bass. It says short scale; do you know if it's 30"?

Yes, 30”. There’s an Anderton’s Music video on you tube from NAMM that features it. Sorry I don’t have the link.

Count me in. I've owned the original Gibson EB-0 and Gretsch 2220. I've got a Hofner 500/1, a Gibson SG bass and the 32" Squier Telecaster VM bass. Oh, and a Taylor Mini G acoustic bass. The more I play the short scale ones, the harder it is to go back to 34" scale. Anyways, I'm a huge fan and I've never had a complaint about string tension. I once made a Frankenbass out of a Tele guitar body and a Bronco neck.

Count me in. I've owned the original Gibson EB-0 and Gretsch 2220. I too bought an EB-O bass new in 1974. Loved everything about I but it’s muddy tone. If only I could have afforded an EB -3

I had an EB-0 at one time. I liked to play it but I didn't like the sound. That is exactly what I experienced when I bought a new EB-O in 1974 or 75. Sold it within 6 months

Here's what I'd do about "muddy tone" if I had and EB-0:
