Can I use my variac to control a heater element?
I need to build a new side bending iron. McMasterCarr sells heater cartridges that seem appropriate. I have an old 10Amp variac. It seems to me that there'd be no problem.

As long as the heater cartridges don’t draw more than a total of 10A at full voltage then it should be fine to use that variac to turn them down. As a cheaper, much lighter and convenient alternative, consider a cooker hob type simmerstat controller.

A cooker hob type simmersat...what ? What languages is that ? I'm glad there's a controller for that....a CHTS sounds dangerous !
