Several makers have flirted with building guitars with hot-swappable (instant change) pickups. Some have used proprietary pickups, and others have used aftermarkets with modifications.
This new approach by Somnium is--I think--a game changer because it allows the user to make their own pickup choices whenever they see fit, with no soldering necessary. It also allows mixing passive and active pickups, which up to this point has been a difficult thing to execute. The electronics to support this versatility are also a real game changer because it adapts to the user's choices strictly via their design, with no alterations by the user necessary to make it all work.
I think this company will *clean up* if they make the main frame, pickup modules, and control circuit available as separate items outside of a completed guitar.
It would also be a huge asset to guitar and pickup makers to use as a test bed for instant comparisons of different pickup recipes.
