I found an old Fender Capricorn 3-12 amp at an estate sale this morning. It was loaded with 3 Altec 12's. Originals were supposed to be JBL. Anyway, this thing lights up but makes some strange noises but I can't get a guitar to play through it. I also got another 2-12 cabinet with another Altec 12 and an old Standel 12" speaker. I bought this thing only to get the Altecs which I will probably end up selling. This old Capricorn and the Altecs date to 1969. This line of amps didn't last very long because so many of them simply quit working. I'd say a pretty good haul for the price I paid for this stuff.
I'll post a picture if I can figure out how to do it.

Click the red REPLY button (not the grey Post Quick Reply button) and then the Add Attachments button. When the pic loads, click the Insert button.

Wow, can’t say I’ve even heard of one of those.

I never heard of that model before either. I'll bet it was heavy if the original came with JBLs.

Only works if your guitar is a Scorpio.

I always liked the line from Teagle and Sprung's book (Fender Amps - The First Fifty Years) about the Zodiac amps:
"Fender's moon must have been in the nut house when they designed this series."

Looks like it may have gotten some serious use, which considering how unreliable the early Fender SS amps were would be surprising. Or maybe wear and tear from moving between storage places.

twangmeister, this thing does show some wear and alterations/mods. The original JBL D-120's are gone but it had Altec speakers in it when I got it. Grill cloth has been changed to black. It powers up but no sounds except some crackling electrical noise. I have no idea what I'm going to do with it. I know I probably won't be sending it to a tech for repair. I bought it for the speakers primarily.

These are 2 of the Altec speakers from the Capricorn amp. I remember when JBL (James B Lansing) and Altec Lansing were of the same company. They put out some of the best speakers back in the day. Correct me if I am wrong but JBL were typically used in Guitar Amps while Altec in PA Speakers.
