Hi. The middle pickup tone control on my Stratocaster works intermittently. Any recommendations for a soldering kit for guitar electronics? I've been looking at the Weller WLC100 40-Watt Soldering Station. Thanks! (Sorry if this is in the wrong area.)

Hakko
I had a Weller for a long time and when it died I got recommendations on the old site for a Hakko.
It has been solidly reliable.
Mine is and older analog version, I see the newer ones are digital temp control.

I have had the same Weller for a few decades. It does a good job. I don't do daily production work with it. The Weller WLC 100 is a huge upgrade from the cheapo 20 watt I tried to use before I had it. I can recommend the Weller based on years of use. It won't hold you back.

I have a Weller WTCPT soldering station and it works very well. My work uses Metcal soldering/rework stations and they're the absolute best, but they're also $1200..
Those are the only brands I have experience with.

I have always bought Weller, always been satisfied. Keep in mind some jobs require more heat than others and some components are damaged by you much heat. Get the right tool for the right job.

A Hakko should serve you well.

Thanks everyone. Looks like either Hakko or Weller will be good choices, so while I make that decision I'll get started on watching videos on soldering technique to solve intermittent tone control issue. Thanks again to everyone for all the help!

I have an older Weller and a Hakko digital. Both are really great for guitar electronics.
Hakkos cost more. But if you can afford it, they are more versatile because of their instant heat recovery and they have tips you can interchange on the fly while working. The tips on the Hakkos last far longer than on the Wellers because the Hakko goes into sleep mode when you park it in the stand.
The only caution on Hakko is there's a large counterfeit market on this brand, so buy only from a big-name vendor rather than getting that incredible deal on fleabay. The counterfeit stuff uses cheap parts and materials, and if something goes wrong with it, you are stuck with no warranty.

I'm now looking at Hakko FX888D-23BY Digital Soldering Station on Amazon. Not to sound more naive than I probably already am, but would it be safe to assume that Amazon would have the genuine article? Thanks very much again.

Probably best to buy direct from them as opposed to their 3rd party sellers

Get a couple different tips as well- a 2-2.4mm chisel tip for soldering to pot lugs, and a wider 4.8mm chisel tip for soldering ground connections to the backs of pots and trem claws.

Just wanted to thank everyone again. Took delivery the other day of Hakko FX888D. Intermittent tone control on one guitar: fixed. Apparently "dead" pickup on other guitar: fixed. Great soldering station, and made the jobs easy and enjoyable. Thanks again!
