My favorite is my 1963 PBass. It was a real beater, poorly refinished with a belt sander & gym floor varnish with the original pickups on. Got it professionally refinished and set up. After a tone search with nearly a dozen pickups, including many boutiques, I settled with replacement pickups by Lindy Fralin. Stringed with TI Jazz Flats, and played through a restored Ampeg V4B, it had a SWEET sound. Regretted selling the V4B, but somebody wanted to buy it more than I wanted to carry it!
Other player I like is my 1974 PBass, round wounds and HEAVY, but sounds good also.
Lately, for Jazz, however, I use a Squire Jazz Bass Made in Indonesia (skunk stripe on the back of the neck). Too old and too tired to invest the time and $$$ for a tone quest again, so it sounds good enough. Regards, Tom D.

My 1964 P Bass only gets played at home. Too valuable to risk at bar gigs. I've got a 1965 Hagstrom ( a duplicate of the one I played at first gig in 1964) My cherry finish Gibson EBO I picked up in 1966. I don't know how much older than that it is. At home I plug 'em into my 1966 Blackface Bassman. (Remember when that was the "wow" amp that bass players coveted in the early 60's?) Many guitar players liked a mid 60's black face bassman. Got the tone they wanted without being overly loud.

That thing was crazy loud even outdoors. We were in a band in 1974 and he decided to play through his Fender Bassman and let me use his Ampeg V4 with one cab for bass. It did a decent job even though it was not specifically made for bass like the V4B.

I really didn’t care much for the sound of the V4B with round-wound strings (Ireally am not a round-wound sound guy), but on flats, all I can say is “WOW”. The equalizing flexibility was outstanding, and not having tried the SVT, it remains the definitive sound for my ears.

I really like my 66P strung with TI flats. Great tone, but I have a P with a Jazz neck, TI flats and Aguilar pickups that's currently my favorite. The tone is close to the 66P but a little more comfortable to play.

Those are beautiful, ilan!
Being someone who likes narrow necks/narrow string spacing (Guild Starfire necks are my comfort zone) I find them particularly attractive.

I love how this thread is spreading out into several interesting areas, all of which (other than the Framus) I've touched on in my 66 yrs on this earth. And I like your comment about the guy playing the virtuoso washtub chops, and you revisiting old "lesser" instruments, only to realize wherein their magic lies. You made me wish I'd hung onto my early 60's Guild Starfire (I just called my friend who I virtually gave it to a few years ago, but, I discovered, he sold it for good money - with my blessing I might add). I've had too many "ones that got away" to ever have regrets, plus although at times I've had small hoards of instruments, I have never considered myself a collector. I prefer my hoards to all get some stage time. I'm currently going thru some "hollow vs solid" experimentations, with a vintage Danelectro, a modern Epiphone Jack Casady, and a modern Reverend Dub King. Love them all, but if I am going off into "alien territory" (i.e. potentially louder stage, or playing thru a supplied amplifier) then I usually trust any solid body. Simply a matter of not having to worry about drones or feedback if things get loud.... I love those old 60's guilds. my number one bass for years was a 67 Bluesbird Guild and I still have it....its on that wall somewhere, along with a 64 Jetstar and a 68 Starfire Attachments:

I had one identical to that, except the master volume knob was really big ( maybe it wasn't original?) - bought used in 72, I think it was from the mid 60's but never did identify it correctly. Cool bass, one of the ones I wish I still had....

My old stuff is long gone.
I do have a sunburst 1982 MIJ Squier Precision which I picked up a few years back. It is like a '62 reissue, but is relatively light due to its sen ash body. When I got it the chrome-plated knobs were all corroded.

Still have my old 72 Pbass , it was pristine when I bought it , now looks like it went through the Boer War . Also have vintage Hofner and Rickenbacker , a 4000 and 4001 . For the last number of years though I've been playing shortscales . A re-issue Dano Longhorn fro the last ten years or so . Still has the factory strings , was made in 98 . Recently picked up that fairly new Gibson Les Paul Jr DC bass . And it just might replace the Dano .

I have been promised a circa 1968 cherry red Gibson EB-3 (jack Bruce). It was my friend's father's bass so his mother says she doesn't want him to sell it. He told me he won't sell it until she passes. I can wait. He also had a 1968 Fender BL DE Bassman amp. I told my friend about the amp and he bought it. I already have one. He got tired of bass and gave it to his son who traded it for dope. I have an Epi Eb-3 for now that a buddy gave me. Jim
