As I recommended above, I think this series was pretty brilliant. A damn shame it was canceled and I think part of the reason it never hit people's radar was the somewhat misleading title. If you like quirky and Coen Brothers style stuff, you might dig this. I find it absolutely necessary to have subtitles on. When John grabs his acoustic and inappropriately sings about the day's espionage, well, its pretty hilarious.

If my mom has cable (she does) does she need a smart T.V. to access Netflix if I were to buy her a subscription? Her T.V. is a CRT. Would have replaced it long ago but she loves the cabinet it sits in and a bigger set won't fit in the cabinet.

On Amazon. Movie: "County Line"(2017). Tom Wopat ("Dukes of Hazzard", "Longmire") does a quite credible job. This one requires a little suspension of disbelief, but is a bit more upbeat than many of the grim crime dramas we've watched lately. As a result, it was actually perfect for our current situation and mood. Acting is mostly pretty good. There's a thing in boxing where an aging older fighter will be matched with a Chickeny, younger, stronger, quicker up-and-comer. At first blush, you'd expect the youngster to whup the old guy hands down, but the old guy is sometimes able to compensate for his opponent's superior strengths with a sly bag of tricks acquired through long experience in the ring. There's a theme along those line in this movie which, due to the demographic of this forum, would likely be appreciated by many here. www.imdb.com/title/tt6243274/

Sour Grapes (Netflix), interesting story of counterfeit Wine.

We are currently rediscovering the original Swedish/Danish version of The Bridge. Four seasons, all on Amazon. Season One is also free on BBC iPlayer. Not to be confused with the remake, set across the US/Mexico border. The original is named for the Oresund Bridge across the sea between Sweden and Denmark. In the first ever episode, a woman's body is found exactly on the border, in the middle of the bridge, though even that is not what it appears to be. The plot then centres on the joint operation between the two Police services. The best bits are the imaginative, multi-stranded plots and some lead characters who are, to say the least, not the norm in crime thrillers.

"Blood" (2018-2020) Story revolves around a medical doctor trying to "gaslight" his estranged daughter who returns home upon the death of her mother. Well-acted with a story that keeps you guessing, but don't watch if you're looking for something light and happy. www.imdb.com/title/tt8991526/

We started a new series on Amazon tonight: "Hamish MacBeth" (1995-1997) 3 seasons. Dark, dry, droll, Scottish humor. If your unfamiliar with the accent and idioms, you might want the subtitles on as a crutch. Not as thick in that regard as some others I've watched: we had little trouble "keeping up". www.imdb.com/title/tt0111993/

I started watching "Kingdom" on Netflix. A drama based around a father who runs an MMA gym and his two sons who are fighters, along with some other good characters as well. I am 5 episodes in, but so far it seems like a good one.
Obviously much of the events take place in the gym, but one wouldn't have to be an MMA fan to enjoy the show, in my opinion. You would have to be tolerant of the fact that there will be MMA fights that occur within the storyline, but its more focused on the lives of the people than the sport. At least so far.

Our soon to be 40 year old son has been talking about "Cobra Kai", so we've given it a whirl. I think with "Stranger Things" there has been a nostalgia trip for the 80's. This is Karate Kid 2020. Daniel LaRusso is now a successful car dealership guy, Johnny Lawrence his arch enemy is a loser who starts the dojo back up. Same actors, lots of flashbacks, comedy and cheesy 80's drama. If you were a fan of the Karate Kid thing you'd probably find this amusing.

I thought it was incredibly well done, it’s just cheesy enough for its 80’s roots yet still holds up. Plenty of references back to the old movie in both dialogue and the soundtrack, which I thought was a job well done. If you were a fan of the movies (I was 8 when the first one came out and EVERYONE wanted to do karate after that), you’ll enjoy the show.

^^It's as good as I've seen. The characters are believable, which is rare. If you like "Bosch" the series, read the books (by Michael Connelly), which are also great. Part of the reason why the books/shows seem "authentic" is that Connelly was an L.A. Times reporter on the crime beat for quite some time. I think he also consults with cops he met as a reporter to help insure that the stories (and details thereof) are plausible.

I've never seen the show but have read most of the Harry Bosch books. I really like Michael Connelly's writing. One bright spot...if/when I ever do have access to the show, I won't have to worry about seeing repeats of episodes I'd already watched !

Don't worry about the show being ruined because you've read the books. My impression is that most episodes are modified enough (relative to the book upon which they are loosely based) that having read the book isn't that much of a spoiler. Of course, it also helps that I read most of the books quite some time ago, so had likely forgotten a bunch by the time I saw the season/episode.

I really enjoyed Bosch. It is well done. Very much so. I believe I left off in the middle of S1 E3, but have already made note that it is different than a lot of police dramas in that they don't have the main characters chasing a new case, which gets resolved at the end of each episode. I like the Bosch approach better, because it seems more realistic than the answer being found in a single 44 minute episode every time. Definitely enjoying it.
