I’ve been following the development of the acoustic bass guitar for at least 30 years, I eventually came across a fairly good deal on Guild B-50 factory fretless back in the 90s.
I did check out the Taylor when they first came out but wasn’t impressed. Seems there’s a lot more going on with these parlor scale ABGs now.
Some months ago I tried one of the Ibanez PNB14E parlor bass and was actually surprised by it’s decent tone and viable volume, by that I mean I can get enough out of it to hang with a guitar player. Certainly just sitting around the house is fine and the tone is good. Plugged in, it’s really nice but I’m using a kind of high end DC powered Phil Jones amplifier, it sounds great through the Rumble 40.
I think the major breakthrough is the string technology for the short scales. This PNB14E has more acoustic presence that the old Guild B-50.
I’ve used the Ibanez along with the PJ 2X4 at rehearsals, that I was amped went unnoticed, I was able to hang with a few pounding dreads outdoors at the Alafia River Rendezvous back in Jan. A couple of friends and I were the only ones that knew I was amplified. One of the guitarists eventually noticed the blue LED leaking through the woven split ash of my canoe basket in which the amp was residing, I forgot to use electrical tape on the LED. He did ask what the LED was, I told him not to mess with my Emotional Support Canoe Basket, he laughed and started another tune, I was helping him to sound better and he didn’t push it. Post 1840 tech is not allowed, I’ve argued that the dreds are a latter era but it falls on deaf ears.
Any one else pull the trigger or looking into the parlor bass guitars?
