I never knew about the double mute on a Country Gentleman, so my youtube search took me to this video which simply blew my mind. I could not stop watching the first minute and a half of this for obvious reasons...
"pseudo nuclear banjo of doom" LOL

Greg is a nutjob. A very talented and entertaining nutjob. His little riff from Love Rollercoaster (Ohio Players) was spot on.
The mute on a guitar has never enjoyed much popularity. Gretsch has incorporated them, Fender has done the same on the Jazzmaster and Jaguar, some basses, have 'em, etc. Most players remove the mute and chuck it for two main reasons: it's easier to mute with the hands and have better control over dynamics, and most mutes became loose over time and turned into rattles. Many vintage Gretsches and Fenders that originally came with the mutes no longer have them.
Where the mute really shines is in the studio because it's a controlled environment. But for playing live, most players toss 'em.

I didn't hear him mentioning the fact that Gretsch has had two kinds of mutes.
The first was engaged by turning knobs. I seems that George Harrison's first Gretsch had this. And I think this was the one that fell off a vehicle and was run over by a following car.
The second was the kind described in the video, where you flip a lever to engage the mute. This was in George's second Gretsch.

Synchronicity. I watched that video yesterday and forwarded it to my best l guitar bud. I have two of his "vintage" original Gretch guitars here in my office, a 53 and a 59.
Here's a bit of Chet Atkins tribute specifically about the Gretsch.
