Every time I play without a pick (which is becoming more often than not) I keep thinking I should just lose the pick entirely. I think that tactile thing is a big part of Knopfler's tone. I have played quite a while without picks in that I like to play arpeggios. To play with picks I would have to get used to finger picks on my thumb and fingers. Wouldn't be an issue if I could find some that don't feel like they are strangling my stubby small fingers. Maybe some of you know where I can get some good ones that are tried and true.

I was not aware of that, I thought in old discussions on the FDP there was some talk about Clapton using a couple of Twins or a Showman at that gig, but that was a long time ago. Edited to add: saw some pics of EC with the dual Sunn amps stacked behind him from the show. Well I'll be, an affront to my cork sniffing vintage tube amp snobbery, lol. Well, you are not entirely wrong either ! At some of the shows on the tour, EC used Showmans or Marshalls. It was apparently at the live shows at the Fillmore that were recorded and a number of other shows that the Sunns were used. I think Sunn supposedly helped outfit or sponsor in some manner the American tour, so that also makes sense. Yet, it is also not so simple, as it has been reported that various mixtures of amps and cabs were seen during the Derek and the Dominoes tour. Sunns on Marshall or Sunn cabs, Showmans on Fender or Marshall cabs, Marshalls on Marshall or Sunn cabs. It was also speculated that EC perhaps used a fuzz/wah pedal at the Fillmore shows to help get his sound, while other have said that just the transistorized Sunn, although incredibly loud, would get that excellent sound when wound right up. Sunn did seem to be aware of various aspects of amplifier overdrive/distortion before it became such an openly recognized part of guitar amp design and a Sunn catalog I have from 1973-74 has a informative section on just that part of amp design.
