I’m still visiting Family down in Homestead FL, I have the guitar scale Ibanez bass and the Phil Jones Double Four bass amp and the Bisonic Bronco with me, as well as the Martin 0015. I was planning on camping on a friends property but the weather turned nasty so the campfire jams never happened. I’ll be heading home tomorrow but this afternoon I’ll be visiting with a friend, his recording studio “Blackstar”.
Anyhow here we are.

How do you like the PJ double Four?

I like it a lot. I’ve got the recommended battery for it, I’ve never run it dry, I’m guess 6 up to maybe 10 hours out of it. It’s stealthy too. I use it in mostly acoustic settings. I have a wireless transmitter/receiver that I use with it. Quite a few times as I’m packing up I’m often told they didn’t know I was using an amp. I use just enough power to be in the mix, usually an acoustic guitar, mandolin and banjo. Backed up against a wall the passive radiator can fill the room. Some good things are being said about the Bose SA1 too, it’s bigger more powerful with bluetooth, I’m satisfied the the double four.

That's pretty much the exact same use I intend. Acoustic jams, bring ABG, hide amp.

The true test will be a few weeks from now. Since 1989 I’ve been attending the Alafia River Rendezvous. This is a pre-1840 Irving history camp endorsed by the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association. I got into Blackpowder shooting in my early teens, then followed it’s history and traditions backwards.
So at these camps music is huge, starting off with all traditional 18th and 19th century music. As the moon creeps higher and the moonshine is passed around endlessly the music creeps into the 20 century, by the time your hearing contemporary stuff spirites are pretty high.
So the deal is nothing that came after 1840 can be displayed. I did bring my old Guild B50 fretless thinking it might handle it, it didn’t. The washtub bass does a decent job of it but so much of my bass playing is far from the 1:4, 1:5 traditional pattern and soon becomes a chore. Usually I just bring a guitar. The requirements are a bit more lax when it comes to instruments. Plenty of dreads, in fact I’m the only one I’ve seen using a 00. Same with the banjo, not really developed before 1840.
My plan is to use the wireless with electrical tape over the led on lights and the 2X4 in my split ash canoe pack, which I use to carry stuff around with anyways. Place it behind my chair keeping it really close to me so the 360 perimeter just sounds like me.
Last year I really had a blast, Joey Hall’s son, Shaun showed up, they have a working band known as Father, Sons and Friends, look them up, I was playing the guitar with the circle and in between songs, not even thinking, I start fiddling with a hand picking blues thing. Shaun heard me and wouldn’t let it go, He said play it. It was late and things got interesting. Every time I tried to sneak away he stopped me, wouldn’t have it. He had his fiddler with him, day job with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. First time in 40 years a dog soldier shut us down for making too much noise, we found other still partying groups in camp and played until 4:00am or so. As much fun as that was, I am much better on the bass than guitar. So this year I’ll see if I can pull it off.

I have a Markbass Minimark that has been used on all sorts of gigs for the past 15 years, or thereabouts. Sometimes with a 1-10 ext. cab, but usually on its own; it has been wonderful. No battery power but anything I've done has always had AC available.

Hushnel, I had no idea what “ Alafia River Rendezvous” was so I looked it up. Sounds interesting. I got to reading various things and found myself engrossed with the Native American History there. Very interesting. Back to your Black Powder Rifle, I can’t imagine having to use that during battle trying to save your life from a raid by any group intent on killing you. Anyway, enjoyed the stories, photos etc.

Well back in those days everyone had basically the same technology. In fact the colonials had superior tech, the english used smooth bore we had rifleing, plus we learned early on to avoid the line and find cover.

Jeffscott, Those are great amps, I’ve never owned one though. I can’t recall the small 150-200 watt bass amp I used to use. It died but I still have it down in the workshop. I need to pull it out and fix it or have someone do the repair.
I really like the tone of my Fender Rumble 40 and have taken it out it on occasion. I’m just not confident that it can handle the hard use working gear must suffer. It lives in the living room hidden behind a lounge chair with the power on and off controlled from my iPhone “o)
My main power rig is pretty light at just under 40lbs using the GB Shuttle 9.0 and the SWR Golight 2X10, gives me 500 @ 8Ω and 900 @ 4Ω. if I need 900 watts I’ll add the SWR 4 by 10” or the Hartke 15”
It’s nice to have options, I’ve never needed 900 watts though.

I still use my Acoustic Image Ten2, which I refer to as R2D2. I actually bought it to play jazz guitar and to double as my bass amp and acoustic instrument amp. A few years back I lent it to our URB player and got out one of my guitar amps for couple of concert gigs.
Love the light weight.
