Got this almost 20 years ago, it's a 1999 according to the serial number.
What is that thing you may ask?
It's a nicely made one off Samick Gregg Bennett factory prototype, before they launched their Avion line of guitars.
Only one AFAIK. (I also have a rare, killer, P90 flat top "LP" from that line).
The top is not thin veneer or Foto junk, but solid quilt maple measuring at the pickup cavities near 1/2" thick.
It's shallow carved, unfortunately not very well book-matched.
Too bad they didn't take time to match it better, looks like it would've matched up perfectly
if only they would've dropped the right side down a bit more. DUH!
Headstock is similar to but smaller than final release design, no logo.
Neck profile is medium fat, very comfortable.
Oddly the only real short cut is the cheap plastic nut. Someday I'll carve a bone one.
It has a really long tenon extending to the bottom of the neck pickup pocket.
Fingerboard has an unusual radius starting from about 10" to 15" at the end.
It's wood is a thick slab of lovely Macassar Ebony, inlays are fairly fitted.
Could be better. Tuners are Grovers.
Body is 2 piece. Wood seems to be nothing special.
All cavities are nicely routed & painted with shielding paint to prevent hum.
A bit thick on the poly finish and a bit clownburst, but not too bad.
Pickups are not the cheap "Duncan Designed" but real Duncans.
Pots are CTS, Switchcraft toggle/jack, Schaller bridge/stoptail, good wiring.
Frets are medium, well done & nicely trimmed to the neck binding.
It came with a really nice plush hardshell case. Again no logo.
Too bad they cut all the corners when this model went into production
Could've been a sleeper like some Tokai's.
Plays and sounds very nice. Super low, clean action. A keeper.
