I've never really been enamored with the pickups in this guitar and have thought about selling it many times, but I love the neck so I've wavered. It's been in the case for awhile so I broke it out for tonight's practice. As an experiment, I lowered the pickups as far as they would go until they were flush with the bezels. It made a big difference in the harshness and it now has that cool SHB vibe. The pups are still a tad grainy with moderate gain but it's manageable.
I may still attempt to replace the pickups someday as a future project but there's no hurry now.

In the early 2000's I had a Gretsch Tennessee Rose. I felt that way about the stock pickups so I replaced them with TV Jones Filtertrons that were a tad smoother. Not sure but I believe ther TV's were alnico II's.

I loved the neck on the one I had it was pretty chunky. I didn’t want to deal with the pickups, so off it went.
I’m glad you made peace with yours. 😎

Anytime a guitar declares war on me, I don't negotiate. I take it out behind the barn and shoot it.

I loved the neck on the one I had it was pretty chunky. It's becoming one of my favorite necks. Anytime a guitar declares war on me, I don't negotiate. I take it out behind the barn and shoot it. Tony Soprano would be proud. I played it at church this morning and was very pleased. It was more reminiscent of my old Heritage 535. I believe the key to these hotter pickups is keeping them farther from the strings.
