Eight Miles High by The Byrds. Hillman is playing a bass with a 2 per side headstock that appears to say Fender. There is a decent view at 3:24 if you don't care to watch the entire video.

It was a mongrel; it's a P-bass with a Gibson EB neck that has a Fender logo stuck on it. From the vid: From a publicity shot:

Thanks, Peegoo. I'm no tech but it seems like that would have been a difficult arrangement to set up properly.

You're correct about the setup; but it's all wood, so nudging the bridge and pickups' locations is a relatively simple thing.
Back then, guitars were not revered like some kind of religious relic like they are today. You did what you wanted and it was no big deal. Nowadays, mess with a guitar and it's like you just slapped someone's mama. I really don't get it.

I wouldn't have taken them for free as they were just too hard to behold

Oh yeah. And it wasn't just guitars. Furniture, cars, houses...lots of stuff gets butchered by their owners, usually followed by mucho regret for having done so. It still goes on today; browse through used guitar parts on fleabay and you'll see all kinds of misadventures in luthiery. Today: "Check this out. I modernized the look of my SG." A year from now: "Crap crap crap crap."

I remember in the late 70's my parents were given a solid wood end table someone painted red, white and blue. I totally stripped it to bare wood, sanded and refinished and it turned a frog into a princess.

Peegoo, I think the SG owner was trying to resolve the "neck dive" issue by removing some weight. And in my mind's eye, that Les Paul actually has 6 pickups, with 6 each of volume and tone. There are 4 single coil pickups and two pairs that make up humbuckers.
