A kid at our church has a Squier Strat that's having issues and he wants to upgrade. His price range seems to be $500-$700. New or used. Since I'm not a Strat guy, what are some good options to recommend?
Thanks!

A G&L Tribute would do him right.

A G&L Tribute would do him right. I immediately thought about G&L.

A 2nd-hand MIM Strat in great shape will be totally giggable and he'll walk away with money in his pocket.
Color is important. Seriously...especially for younger players.

I haven’t had a Tribute Strat, but the Tele I had was all that.

Yeah, MIM with money in reserve for minor work if needed or a case.
There's a lot out there. Some qualifying to see if any of the extra bells & whistles would be beneficial to him could be helpful, though I personally don't get all jazzed up over that stuff.

A simple way to determine that a used guitar has not been messed with (possibly messed up) is to closely examine all the screw heads on the guitar. Check the neck screws, pickguard screws, tuner screws, etc.
Any evidence of gorilla force with a dull screwdriver is pretty solid evidence of amateur experimentation and possible damage. Also check the wood or plastic around any screw head for apprentice marks caused by a screwdriver having slipped out of the screw.
A good tech is very careful to prevent this sort of goofiness.

That's a good point. Since he's not well-versed in guitar construction and technologies he'd be less likely to get duped and overpay for something.
I sent him a couple of links to possibilities listed here. I recommended Sweetwater for their excellent service.

It’d be at the top end of the price range, but I’m a huge fan of the 200-2008 Fender American series.

Lots of options on Ebay or Craigslist. Older Am Std newer MIM. If it's not a matter of just has to have a Fender over a Squire the Squire Classic Vibe series.

New, a MIM Player-series Strat. These are superb and on equal footing with many USA-made Strats made over the past 10 years. The Player is right at the top of his budget ($700). The pickups are exceptional for a guitar in this price range and the quality of parts and fit and finish are amazing for a new sub-$1K Strat.
If he already has a gig bag or case for his Squier, it will fit this too.

I second this -- get a late 80's to mid 90's Am Std. They're cheap(ish), well built, and have versatile pickups that sound great.

If it was me, I'd be looking for a classic vibe, and save myself $300 - $400.
I have a mid 90's AmSe, original 1977 natural, AVRI62 Hot Rod and a Nash S65, all of which I gig with from time to time, but I'm more than happy to play entire gigs with my CV'62.
