So a couple of days ago my wife told me she had been hearing some animal near the house but did not know what it was. When I got to work she texted me a picture of a fawn in the yard, all hunkered down in the grass by a tree. She called DNR but they were closed, call a deer rescue and was told 'they do that, jump a fence to calve so predators cant get to it. The doe will come to nurse and then leave. Dont worry, leave it there it will be fine'. Well, it wailed most of the night and when we got up to check it was dead. That is kind of what I expected but my wife is pretty sad about it. Nature is a bit of a b*tch sometimes.

Nature is a bit of a b*tch sometimes. Yep: "red in tooth and claw", as Tennyson said. "Mercy" is a luxury enjoyed only by the civilized, powerful and well-fed, both in the giving and in the receiving. Mebbe something "got" mama before she could make it back.
RIP, Bambi...

The momma deer was out trying to make a buck...and neglected her parental responsibilities ..

That sucks. Occasionally when we get up to the ranch in the spring we find one or two dead from whatever; drowned in a pond, or just run out their time. It's hard to watch.

Yeah, nature can seem even more horrific when it deals out death and destruction with what seems like indifference to us.
