Just curious, I've never been a whiskey guy, but lately been indulging in the occasional Jack and Coke. If a schlub were to explore sipping a whiskey neat or on the rocks, is JD as good as any to start with, or is it the WalMart of whiskeys?

I've never been a fan of the black label stuff. Their green label tastes better and is a lot smoother.

It is popular, whatever that is worth. I think Wild Turkey is better, Evan Williams is almost dirt cheap and it pretty good. Their round bottle stuff works for me.

I think Jack is a fine Tennessee whiskey, which technically is bourbon anyhow ... Overhyped a bit, and overpriced ...
There was a famous celebrity singer from Hoboken who loved it... Evan William's White Label BIB or black label are my choice ... the oldest distillery in KY ... Their license # is 1 ... George Dickel is another Tennessee whiskey that's worth a sip ...

I like it . When I drink JD , its usually with Vernors Ginger Ale instead of coke. Just like the taste. With coke , Capt Morgans spiced rum gets the nod from me.

Jack Daniels is technically a Whiskey, because it's been filtered through charcoal.
Try their Single Barrel Select, it's probably twice the price but quite good.
No. 7 is popular for good reason, but there's a lot better out there.

Oh yeah, growing up in Detroit with Windsor just across the river, Crown and Vernors are not unfamiliar to me. Vernors is medicine for Michiganders.

It was my maternal grandmother who started my Vernors addiction when I was a wee lad. She was from Lansing, MI.

The whisk(e)y aficionados I pay attention to don't mind Jack Daniels. They don't look down their noses at it. I don't think any consider it their go-to, but do have a slight soft spot for it. I haven't bothered drinking it in a long, long time, mainly because there are so many other options out there, and the big name has the effect of inflating the price a bit.
I think whenever you have a drink with strong brand name cache there will inevitably be a group of people repelled by that.

Charcoal filtering makes Tennessee whiskey a bit smoother than other whiskey... Evan Williams is also filtered ...

It’s not bottom shelf, but it’s a fairway or two from top shelf. And yes, it’s filtered through charcoal which separates it from bourbon.

I am enjoying the Japanese whiskeys from Suntory. They got very high marks and sold out. So now they have NAS non age specific whiskeys till the second plant production has 6 to 15 years to mature. Lighter in color and mouthfeel the Toki has a good price point. Harmony a bit more complex but very good. Suggest both for sippin not mixin

I've got a bottle of No.7 that someone gave me in the back of the cabinet. As long as I have a jug of Woodford Double Oak or Maker's 46 (which I always do), No.7 probably won't see the light of day. Unless I give it to my wife to add to her eggnog in the Fall -- but while it's far from my favorite, it doesn't deserve to be defiled like that.

We toured the Maker’s distillery and really enjoyed the samples poured at the end of the tour (the whole tour was very interesting). What we thought was funny is we toured with our Corvette club where we were poured all these really healthy pours of Makers and then they turn you loose in a bunch of high horse-powered cars and say, “have fun”. ZIPPEE! I have no idea how this website works, but my quote totally disappeared.

I can handle Ol' NO 7. It's smoother than Maker's Mark and some the other more pricey stuff. A good friend has a cabinet filled with just about every brand and some of the most expensive ones are as smooth as turpentine.
My daughter and SIL bought me an early Father's Day present of Woodford Reserve. With an ice cube, it makes a good sipping bourbon.
I agree Evan Williams isn't bad for the price.

I was born, raised, and still live in East TN and am man enough to admit I prefer KY bourbon to No. 7. Maybe it’s because I never really liked liquor when I was younger and everyone always bought shots of JD, often near the end of the night, which I sometimes downed reluctantly.
I only buy bourbon or whiskey a couple times a year and Buffalo Trace, Bulleit, Elijah Craig, or Angel’s Envy the typical fifths.
Bulleit rye makes a great manhatten fwiw.

I don’t mind JD, and in fact I got a bottle a couple of weeks ago for my birthday. I quite often drink JD with coke, whereas I wouldn’t do that with Knob Creek, Woodford Reserve et al.

Jack on the rocks is ok with me. I prefer Woodford. Not impressed with Makers Mark. TX blended on the rocks is one of my favorites. Just finishing up a bottle of Black Bush Irish whisky that was quite enjoyable.
