Here's my take on the origin of the 'TV' name, based on what I know about the guitars and when they were produced. That yellow was originally called limed mahogany because it was a cheap way to make the plain, smooth-grained mahogany appear richer in color. The guitar was was later called the 'Les Paul TV' and even later the color 'TV yellow' by players, not by Gibson; it was never originally the official name. But just like the term Nocaster--which Fender adopted only after collectors began using it for the rare, no-name Broadcasters--Gibson began referring to the color as TV yellow.
The color had nothing to do with improving contrast in TV studio lighting. Additionally, one look at the models with the sunburst finish will instantly inform you the sunburst would make the guitar appear more prominent on TV because it had a bright yellow center with a brown/black outline. In reality, nobody was playing these on TV (hello!). Anyone playing guitar on TV was playing a higher-end guitar. You have to remember the Juniors and Specials were down-market models, made cheaply for students and non-professionals who couldn't spend the money for a carved-top or arch-top Gibson. It was only later into the 1960s that rock-n-rollers began to realize the mighty roar and rich tones these guitars, played through a Marshall amp, were capable of generating.
The TV name came from the fact that these cheap guitars were introduced at the same time the Les Paul TV show (Les Paul and Mary Ford at Home) was a popular Friday night show on television. It was this association with the show that gave it the TV name.

Well alright! Im going to do that right now. Right this very minute I'm regretting selling off my Lil Dawg 5E3, the Laney VC 15 will have to do. It's been a while since I had a P90 guitar. Why do they have to take so long? I cant remember being quite this excited about a guitar. Ive had a TV Yellow Les Paul Special, I think it was from some time in the 70s, with P90s, not 100s. It was nitro and over time got an ever so slightly green coming through the finish. It was in pristine condition. I sold it because Im not that excited about having 4 knobs to swirl around. I sold my Elite and Elitist Casinos for some God forgotten reason. Im sure it has nothing to do with the 4 knobs but the actual reason slips my mind. I'm obviously a bit dimmer than your average dumb ass. Its 4:49PM EST and I wait for the proverbial "by end of day" delivery. Sigh.

I saw that and pulled the trigger. I dont shop at guitar center often enough to know what they mean by "blemished" and "back ordered". Are they backordered on damaged guitars?

I don't know if they're guitars that were returned to Gibson, or if they're guitars that are on their way back to GC from an unhappy buyer, but the term back ordered seems like a strange term for the status of a flawed guitar.
Chances are it was probably a floor display model that has some micro scratches, and is being returned, but the GC doesn't have it yet. Hard to know for sure without contacting them. If you call them you might be able to find out. Either way, You're going to have either 30, 90, or 180 days to return it, I'm not sure which.
I don't mind blemished guitars at that price one bit. It's just the beginning of a nice relicing at a discount price.

We're cut from the same cloth. I have a question about this line... Ive heard the neck is maple. If so, does that imply the neck is stronger?

They do have a maple neck. I didn't know the answer to your strength question, so I did a search.
Some Gibson forum discussion seems to show a lot of people saying maple is a harder wood, and brighter in tone than Mahogany. If maple is harder wood, I would be curious to know, because often harder woods can be more brittle. It was said that the maple is a more stable neck wood. That's great for when your not dropping, or banging your axe on stuff, but how would it fair in a drop vs Mahogany?
We may never know.
Peeg's builds-um. Maybe he knows.

It must be different stores are getting these in here and there, and GC has them at this price for a time. One day they're out, the next they in. The colors keep changing back and forth between Blue Stain, and Worn Cherry.
Anyways.

Maple being a more dense wood than mahogany--yes, it's stronger across the grain.
Wood density is measured by specific gravity. There are several varieties of maple, but the specific gravity is usually around .070 to .073 or so. Differing varieties of mahogany runs in the .057 to .061 range. These numbers are per my wood books. In general terms, the higher the specific gravity of a wood, the less air (more wood) there is in a given volume of wood. More wood means higher strength.
The specific gravity of water at sea level is 1.00, so this gives you an idea of the density relationship between maple and mahogany.

The other thing is Hawaii, and Alaska can't ship to the lower 48, so if the axe is located there you're SOL.
One of my Worn Cherry's is supposed to show up here tomorrow.

Good one Leftee! A DC even! Cool cool cool, Vibroluxer! Mine came in. I haven't opened it yet. Just got home from a knee surgery. I'm a slow opener anyways. I like to savor the moment. If you can, put up a pic or two when you get a chance.

How's the knee feeling?

Post by De ville on Jun 12, 2020 17:25:07 GMT -5
Oh, I'm doing pretty good. Had a pain pill, so that's helping. It was a pretty simple procedure, just an arthroscopic meniscectomy for an obleak horizontal flap tear of the medial meniscus. Left knee.
Dull ache, and some sharp pains here and there where they inserted their tools. I have 3 tiny openings.
I haven't even opened my guitar box yet. But I'm staring at the box, and enjoying knowing there is a sweet instrument in there waiting for me. It's all part of my process. I'm savoring it. LOL!

You took a pain pill and haven't opened it yet?? For shame!
Seriously, I'm glad it went ok. Hope you heal well and quickly.
I've been playing each on and off during the day. The weight difference is quite noticable. The Jr comes in at 6 pounds 8oz and the Special at 8 lbs 2 is.
