I don't play guitar much anymore, just bass.
But this afternoon, I fired up my Clark 5E3 Deluxe clone and ran a Gretsch 6122 JR through it.
Lord...who needs pedals?
What a tone machine that amp is...

Today, even better with P-90s.
A match made in heaven...

I used to have 2 Lil Dawg 5E3s. Everything sounded great through them and I plan to replace one of them fairly soon.

The "inter-activeness" of the channels takes some getting used to, but with it, you can dial in some really cool results. People rave about 5F1 Champs, which are indeed very cool. But compared to a 5E3, well...sorry: no cigar. I even went so far as to "re-house" a '59 5F1 chassis in a custom-made 5E3-sized cab with a 12" Weber speaker: much better, but it still just doesn't get it "there".

I have Weber Black Tolex 5E3x2 (4 6v6s) almost looks like a Blues Jr and I play it with a Fender FR1000 reverb unit. (Extremely underrated reverb, if you don't play surf music, I highly recommend one, the reverb beats any spring reverb pedal that I've used.
5e3x2 Great tones, very classic old school in a 1940s-1950s kind of way when dialed low. You can play 40s Jazz, Jump Blues, 50s Pop/Rock, any Blues... Past 3 on the dial, it turns to mean, and I mean Ken Fisher Trainwreck mean!
If an amp is of quality and set up right (right tubes, right speaker, etc) Shouldn't be that much of a call for pedals other than in some cases a buffer or compressor/sustainer.
5E3 is one great circuit. All great Tweeds have a dirty but clean dynamic.

"All great Tweeds have a dirty but clean dynamic. "
That's a great way of putting it. Clean - yes, but there's an underlying dirt on your shoes.
