The middle pickup - not bassy enough; not trebly enough; not 'out of phase'?
Maybe you should try it - I like it personally.

I've always liked the middle pup by itself on my #1 Strat. Full sounding, versatile and works for many songs. SRV certainly made use of it as did Jimi.

Back when I was using Strats as my live gig guitars, I used the middle extensively.
I never used the in-between positions, those sounds never really worked the the type of music I was playing. Middle by itself, and bridge by itself mostly, and on rare occasion I'd use the neck.

I use the 2 and 4 position while recording and at home a lot. For some reason they seem to get lost in a live situation. I did a lot of middle pickup in my gigging days.

I think Dave Gilmour used Middle quite a bit. I know I do, when I'm playing Floyd.

I used the middle a lot, but did (or do) switch it up a lot, the least used is probably the bridge position for me.

Interesting responses.
It's tempting to think of positions 2 and 4 as being 'the' Strat sound despite being fairly impractical prior to the 5 way switch.
Those were my go to positions as a starting out player but I fell out of love with those sounds over the years for some of the reasons mentioned above.
In hindsight, I suspect the less focused/cutting out of phase tones were like a safety net for my playing?

I use the middle pickup quite a bit. Mostly for rhythm playing.

I've read that Robin Trower uses the middle pickup extensively.
