I had a little project I needed to knock out that allows me to proceed with another bigger project. Here is a picture of it in progress; these are made from Doug fir dowel (ancient mop handle rescued from the trash), 1.25" diameter. Each little slice is 1" long, has a 1/4" hole drilled all the way through the middle, and the tops have a small bevel all the way around. There are 40 of them. I shot them with a coat of clear polyurethane, and there are a couple more parts necessary to complete the job. What the heck are these? First person with the correct answer wins my admiration and respect...as if anyone actually needed an endorsement like that from a goober like me

"Are you making spool clamps?" DING DING DING We have a winner! These will get a cork pad added to the bottom of each one, then a 10" carriage bolt goes through a pair of them, and a washer and wing nut goes on the threads. I'll have 20 total. I had a bag of these that I could not find, and then I remembered I loaned them to a pal about six years ago...who has since moved out of state. Those were also shop-made. No biggie, I hope he's using them and feeling guilty but these are stupid cheap and fun to make. Here's how they get used:

Do you have a job in the works that necessitates them, or will they just be lying waiting for something?

I have a fiddle (4/4 violin) to build. It's a Stew-Mac kit that has been sitting in its original unopened cardboard carton for more than 10 years.
Ya think Tony Stradivari aged his wood the same way?
I'm leaning toward seafoam green...

I’ve got two of those kits to build. It’s been over a year now.

He would've used special Italian wood seasoning. The secret is the oregano.

I've got some of that! I might add some basil to it. Because Tony Stradivari + Toni Basil = OhMickeyYoureSoFine, YoureSoFineYouBlowMyMindHeyMickey! HeyMickey!
You know the deal.

The question is how the Irish fiddle playing sounds so good when they just boil everything and season nothing.
So much in this world to ponder...

Mission accomplished. Max opening is 6" so it will cover fat guitars as well as mandolins and violins. They're not perfect, but they'll do. Anyone got a good way to hang these on the wall? Most folks toss them into a container, but I think I'll make a little rack so they hang with the other clamps.

Humm, I have a bunch I made years ago, sadly still clamped to the dred project. I really should finish it.
Picked up some threaded rod at the hardware store this morning, made a jig/clamp to hold the round blades used in cutting fabric., so I can re-sharpen them. The blades are not expensive but I need sharp when I need sharp. I did both of them just an hour ago and I swear they’re sharper than new. That final polishing with the jeweler’s rouge is the ticket.

I just keep mine in a plastic bin like you get at the box stores. For hanging... I'm remembering some rather silly tie racks from the late '80s and early '90s that advertised on tv, sort of gun rack-ish things but folded up and down. You'd probably put more effort into the rack than you did the clamps if you did that...
If I was using them more often than I do, I might consider something magnetic, assuming the carriage bolts you use are magnetic.

Magnetic strip is a great idea, and that would work for these steel carriage bolts. It's what I currently use for handled drivers, picks, and chisels. I prefer this to a holder or rack that you have to poke the tool into. And they're cheap!
