I'm rethinking the pickguard and controls on my dual humbucker Strat, which is currently set up with 2 volume controls and 1 tone plus a standard 3 way switch. As nice as it seems to have 2 independent volume controls I find it a clunky adjustment. I think I'm heading to a single volume single tone control config with a 3 way blade. But I'm not sure where to have them placed on the pickguard. I'm pretty set on the volume being in the standard Strat position (call me Mr. Pinky), but what about the tone? Position 2 or 3? My instinct is to put it where the standard Strat 1st tone knob is, but...but...I can't decide. BTW, I'll be ordering from Warmoth and don't believe they do any custom location drilling, although I could just have them drill the volume knob hole and drill the tone control anywhere I suppose.
WWYD?

I’ve ordered from them and drilled my own holes. Just had them cut for the switch.
I think I would go with the #2 position if keep the volume the same. What I prefer is to delete the volume pot hole and just have the other two - top for volume and bottom for tone.

Yeah, I've never had a problem with the volume knob location like a lot of people complain about. I can see moving it ever so slight toward the first tone knob and moving the tone knob accordingly.

The volume knob issue has never been a problem for me, because I'm one of those people who reaches down and makes sure it's on 11 every chance I get.
When I build custom guitars, it's one volume in the number two position in one tone in the number 3.

I think the Strat volume thing might be a lefty issue. Wiring the pots righty on a lefty Strat seems to set up the condition where we turn down the volume as we play.

When I build custom guitars, it's one volume in the number two position in one tone in the number 3. I thought about that but my pinky ain't long enough to ride the volume knob.

Like Pinetree, I like a single vol and an single tone on Strats.
When you go to drill the two holes in the pickguard, think about the hole locations because sometimes the tendency is to drill the holes too close to each other. Have at least 2" between 'em.
And since you're getting a pickguard from Warmoth, consider a Switchcraft (Les Paul type) three-way switch. When I build two pickup guitars, this is usually the switch I like...even for Teles. It's easier to use while playing.

Where would you place the switchcraft, Peegoo? I presume you don't mean upper horn?

No, down in the middle hole between the vol and tone controls,

Whoa, that's actually a pretty cool idea.

If you decide to use a Switchcraft switch, get the short straight version, or the 90-degree type because the standard long one is too long to fit into the recessed control cavity. The short straight one is the best choice because the lateral length of the 90 switch can interfere with the angle you may want to flip the switch bat. The long end of the switch can make contact with the side of the cavity and prevent it rotating to the position you prefer. Generally, the ideal switch flip angle is 90 degrees from your forearm in the playing position.
