I'm exploring a speaker change in my 1960 Gibson 25 watt amp....it has a reconed, original, P12N..I'm having a love/hate relationship with it...I'm guessing I've put close to 30 hours on it give or take....
it compresses pretty quickly as you crank the amp..which is ok with single coils, but with humbuckers the bass gets a bit too loose...even with the bass control between 3-4.....there are some days that I love it..and days (like today) I don't
I'd like to stay with an Alnico mag speaker to keep the vintage vibe...but at the same time, I'm kinda liking the Eminence speaker the Victoria Regal uses.
something with a tighter bottom end, tapered warmer highs, and a bit more headroom
wata ya got?

I don't think you can go wrong with the Em Legend 1518
I, too, noticed Victoria amps uses Em Legends. IMO Mark Baier knows his stuff. I installed an Em Legend 1258 in a 5e3x2 and have never looked backed. I gained a new appreciation for the Em legend 1258s (and the Fender OEM Special Design) and have gone on to use them in two other amps. To my ears, there is a proprietary difference between an Eminence Legend 1258 and a Fender OEM Special Design (I have both) The Legend sounds better in all categories (probably due to having a better driver)
If you're on a budget, shop around, you can find Fender OEM 1518 cheap.. New, the Legend 1518 goes for $99, that isn't a lot for a speaker. (Note ... they high-powered compared to vintage, big difference in sensitivity, much louder.)

wow 60 views and only one response...but I appreciate it... I know 15's aren't common but they have a cool vibe to em that is totally different..
I was playing mine today and it was a great day...it sounded fantastic...kinda made my eyes roll back in my head ya know?....
but I know that tomorrow or maybe the day after I'll be left in wanting..
a good friend of mine has the Regal and he's a picky SOB about his stuff...and the loves the Eminence in his....
it would be my first choice...price isn't really that important if it's the right speaker...I love Weber's stuff but might have to deviate this time.....100 bucks for a speaker is cheap... it might be awhile before I pull the trigger put I'll post afterwards...

I've had and have 15s. But as you were asking about specific ones, I didn't chime in. I used to have a Peavey Delta Blues w/1-15 in it. It was/is a great amp, even with the stock speaker. Then I put a Weber California in it (ceramic) and it sounded even better. Don't have the amp anymore, but it was a great one. Really learned a lot when I was playing that thing. Then quite a few years back I bought an Allen Brown Sugar w/1-15 Weber California (also ceramic) and it's just a truly fabulous amp. Great sounds, so smooth, and full. Definitely my favorite.

I have zero experience with a 15” speaker. I prolly need to remedy that. I’ve heard some pretty cool tones from them.

"wow 60 views and only one response"
Yeah, 15s have not been common at all with guitar players for perhaps 20 years. My only experience with them is a Peavey Delta Blues combo amp from the 80s I got second hand. The 15 did not sound modern at all (that was the whole idea behind the amp), but for old-school stuff it worked great. If I were playing that stuff a lot I would've kept it, but I let it go and have not missed it at all.

Mostly play Fender guitars and amps. I'm 71 and have had a guitar since 1964. Got serious in 1975.

It has been a very long time since I've had an amp that used 15" speakers.

I have a 15" Eminence Legend that I use in an open back cab I built. Powered with a '66 Bandmaster, it has a very full sound and plenty of highs, but no icepick. Love it.

I know folks often think a 15" speaker is about big low end. But I don't think that's necessarily the case. My experience has been they offer a smooth sound across the frequency spectrum--smooth pleasing highs--with just a nice full sound. The Peavey Delta Blues came in a 1-15 combo and a 2-10 combo. You have to remember from geometry that 1-15 has a greater surface area than 2-10s--even though that doesn't seem logical (pi-R-squared, being the formula for surface area of a circle). So you get really nice broad coverage sonically from a 15 inch speaker. You get a more intense "focus" from the 10 inch speakers, all other variables being equal.

I have an Excelsior Pro (blue) that came with an EM 1518 - I think it's a really good sounding speaker. Look up how much the magnet weighs.

I have 3 different 15’s. 1 JBL D140 grey frame, 1 eminence legend 1518 and 1 Altec (i forget exactly which one, but’s is a 70’s). I found an empty 1968 Fender Tone Ring cabinet and tried all 3. By far the JBL D140F sounds the best. I use it with a 1974 Twin Amp. They match up perfectly.

I put a EM 1518 in my Excelsior and am quite happy with it.
The weight difference between it and the stock speaker is substantial!

That is a drawback. It makes the cabinet larger and heavier. "You have to remember from geometry that 1-15 has a greater surface area than 2-10s--even though that doesn't seem logical (pi-R-squared, being the formula for surface area of a circle)." Yeah, it is counterintuitive. Reminds me of the Steven Wright joke: "When I turned two years old I was really anxious, because I'd doubled my age in a year. I thought, if this keeps up, by the time I'm six I'll be ninety." Here's a comparison of speaker sizes and cone surface area I created years ago when I was building a lot of speaker cabinets:

I have a closed back single 15 cab with a Cerwin Vega in it (I think), that I use with a Marshall JCM 900 SLX 50 watt head.
I really like it tonally with all my guitars.

Ok..I went with a 50 watt Weber 15F150...light dope and H dustcap...
the description of it on their web site is right on the money..(fancy that!)
"Loud, big low end, smooth high end, aggressive, later breakup, more headroom than the AlNiCo version."
I noticed a huge improvement in headroom, and tighter bottom..more so with single coils than humbuckers...but the speaker is new and its going to take some hard work to soften it up some...
The original re coned P15N is a great speaker but was a bit too "spongy", (for lack of a better word) for my taste
I considered the Weber California and Chicago...as well as the Eminence Legend, but the wattage on all of them made me a bit leery that I wouldn't get enough break up...
I appreciate all of the great input gentlemen...a round of Duff's on me!

My first Fender amp in 1968 was a used Vibrasonic which had a 15" JBL. That and an "old" Strat was how I rocked in theose days.

Ok..I went with a 50 watt Weber 15F150...light dope and H dustcap... Several years ago I put 2- 10F150's in a guitar amp and they were great, especially shined with a strat. I had humbucker guitars back then and when a guy brought his strat to check it out, I couldn't believe how good they sounded. He snatched it right up

He snatched it right up I've had many Weber speakers...and only once did I buy one that just wasn't a good match for the amp...I believe it was a 12A125...for a 1958 Gibson Ga-20...the bottom end was just to loose......I replaced it with a 12A150 light dope, H dustcap and it made a huge difference....
I remember several years ago I called Weber to leave a message...it was probably about 10 oclock in the evening...and Ted answered the phone....and we spoke for several minutes.....
it impressed the hell out of me...

15" speakers used to be very popular with steel guitar players. A friend gave me a 4 ohm JBL M31-4 15" speaker for helping him move a few years ago. I bought a Crate single 15 speaker cabinet on Craigslist and put it in there. Sounds wonderful with my BFTRRI. Big and clean. It also works quite well for bass as long as it's not pushed too hard. I don't really have the right amp for that.

Back in the day I bought the Peavey Delta Blues 15 and man, I really liked the amp. A week later the reverb died and because of availability and timing, I swapped it for a C30, which is another great amp. But I really wish I could have stuck with the DB. Definitely an amp that had something going.
