Out of the many pedals I own (no ideas how many I have but I think it may be around the hundred mark give or take) I've got rid of around 12-14 (I think). Anyway, no regrets except for one, a Marshall ED-1 Edward The Compressor. The chain of events is:
> Had Edward for a few years (an Indian built version, wish I could remember the year of manufacture). Liked the tone colouration, fairly low noise and the Emphasis control. Used it for tone shaping and not as a utility pedal, and used it a lot.
> Started getting curious about other compressors so purchased a Dynacomp thinking it will be the bees knees.
> Offloaded Edward without a second thought during 2012. No A-B comparisons because I so believed the Hype.
> Played the Dynacomp about four times in nearly eight years. Not exactly pleasant colouration, noisy, muddy sounding, unpleasant 'pops' depending on how hard the strings a picked, volume control way to sensitive around the 11 O'clock mark with a big jump.
> Thought about Edward quite often because I missed his features. Never really stopped thinking about the little fella.
> Purchased a VFE White Horse (buggered if I know when but it was after Edward was gone and a long time before the Compressor Pro). Good pedal but different. Didn't scratch the Edward itch.
> About 2 years ago purchased a Keeley Compressor Pro in the hope I'd capture the essence of Edward. A fantastic pedal but more for utility rather than tone shaping.
> Yesterday I stumbled across a new-old stock Edward (2007 Chinese built, sat in a guitar shop for twelve years from delivery). Made an offer, picked it up for a reasonable price.
> Happy as a pig in poo. Compared to the earlier one I had (from memory) it is quieter and the Emphasis control is way more effective. Has a really pleasant OD crunch when used with humbuckers and the volume is cranked. Maybe I understand the pedal more but in every respect it seems better than the Indian built version.
> Along the way learnt a bit about different compressor circuits (OTA, VCA, Optical) and as much as I'm not a Dynacomp fan I've decided to keep it purely because it's a classic and may yet find a use for it.
Anyone else have similar stories?
