I started my horror addiction mid 50s with the obligatory Dracula-Frankenstein-Wolfman trinity of films But the real terror came with "The Thing" starring James Arness as the not-so-jolly green giant from outer space.
The terror came from you never actually SEEING it for most of the movie- only knowing it was getting closer by crashes, yelping dogs, geiger counter readings, etc. So you were on the edge of your seat most of the movie. (there was a teaser, where it broke down a door, and you caught a badly lit silouette for a few seconds)
But then at movies' end, after drawn out preparations, the door at the end of the long corridor broke open, and it made its entrance slowly advancing, snarling as only a hungry blood drinking vegetable could snarl.
Pretty intense for a grade school horror film fan!

The terror came from you never actually SEEING it for most of the movie Yeah...and you remember the part where the guy who is guarding James Arness (The Thing) in a block of ice just can't stand sitting next to it? So he throws a blanket over the block of ice so he doesn't have to look at it. Turns out it's an electric blanket. Then a little while later they show you the drips of water coming off the block of ice. "Uh-oh...here comes trouble!"

One of the best. The new 1985 , The Thing, is an awesome movie as well.

The new version of The Thing is one of my all time favorite movies. John Carpenter is a brilliant director, and story teller. Kurt Russel was always great as a bad ass in role. This movies still gets me on edge. Others I can think of. Some have been mentioned. Poltergeist The Thing I love Curt Russel as the bad ass in movie roles like Schwarzenegger.
Hellraiser movies Forbidden Planet.
The Blob War Of The Worlds.
The flying monkeys Twilight Zone the movie - The Jet Airplane portion, and the portion with the evil kid with the powers.

The two that come to my mind are the Talking Tina episode of The Twilight Zone, and the final 3rd of Trilogy of Terror with Karen Black and that Zulu hunter doll.

When I was dating my future wife (~1990) there was a TV series called 'Friday the 13th'. Nothing to do at all with the movies. It was a about a curio shop with evil objects. I had the creeps several times driving home alone from her apartment after watching that show.

Concerning 'The Thing.."- for the record, (or maybe off the record, since I can't remember the source), The 1985 'remake' was much closer to the original novel than the 50s version, in that the Thing could morph into different shapes..

Perhaps that's true. But I thought the old 1950s version in black and white worked better from the standpoint of manipulating the terror for the viewer. Much greater use of subtlety and suspense, etc.

My father took me to see Jaws when I was around 8. That movie scared the bejesus out of me. I didn’t see Jaws until I was an adult. Maybe the experience was different at the time it came out, but the ridiculous fakeness of the shark makes me feel like it’s impossible to be scared of it. Also, the shark is always accompanied by that music before he attacks. Just get out of the water at the first “Duuuuh DUHHHH”.

The Incredible Shrinking Man freaked me out a little, especially the ending. He just keeps shrinking?? Whoa....

"Invasion of the Body Snatchers" freaked me out so bad I needed therapy. Basically you are just sitting there and doze off and wake up as a seed pod. So why would you trust your parents when they tell you to lay down and take a nap. I was no fool. I knew what was coming next.

I remember being completely freaked out by some scenes in The Wizard of Oz. I was probably about 4 or 5. My parents took me to see it at a drive-in, pretty sure I was so scared I was crying. Have never been freaked watching a horror flick of any kind that was intended to be scary. I did find Invaders from Mars quite disturbing, but not actually scary, when I saw it on TV at a very young age.

slacker 🐨... The movie you're remember is "Theatre of Blood." It's brilliant. High camp and very funny. I highly recommend watching it again, if you have the chance. BTW... Does anybody here remember the ear-wig episode from the old "Night Gallery" series. That terrorized a generation of my peers when I was a kid.

•I'm generally not a Tom Cruise fan.
•I generally don't like "re-makes".
•I wasn't young when this came out.
But I thought Spielberg did a fantastic job on this one. Creepy as all post-apocalyptic get-out:

Wait Until Dark.
I don't want to spoil it for those that have not seen the film, but it felt like the audience collectively jumped about 4 feet in the air at one point in the movie.
