The Leslie I got a few weeks ago was making a noise. It was the tensioner idler pulley bearing on the belt for the upper rotor. I put a couple drops of oil on it and it helped but didn't fix it. The sound was only audible when it was in the fast mode. I had to order the bearing. $6, cheap. While I was in there I decided to do a lube job on all the moving parts. I knew the guy who had that thing for the last 20+ years and I know he never serviced it. He didn't have any technical abilities other than he was an incredible keyboard player and a great songwriter. I'm not sure he even owned a screwdriver. Nothing like changing the oil and lubing the chassis on your amp. Good thing I didn't need jack stands to crawl under it.

My Mesa Boogie needs a new set of Fallopian tubes and a nocturnal emitter.

Note to self;
Never buy a used amp from Leftee.

Yeah, when treated like a rented woman.
So to speak.
ninworks, is the top belt made of cotton rope? If so, these often are made with the two ends glued together. Over time as the belt wears and becomes thinner, that glue bond maintains its oiginal diameter. This can cause the belt to make a clicking sound as it contacts the pulleys' surfaces. The good news is replacements are available, and they're inexpensive.

The bearing is definitely bad. I can feel it. It may need a belt as well but the bearing is first on the list.
I'm working through this thing a little at a time. It needs new salt and pepper grill cloth on all the openings. Unfortunately all that I can find is the stuff made in China. It looks correct but the weave is a lot more open than the original. This is the same grill cloth Marshall used back in the day. I see that the new Spark amps use this same cloth. I haven't been able to see one close enough to tell if it is the open weave variety or not. It probably is since I am of the understanding that the original has been out of production for years.
I also want to replace the gold plated edge T molding that surrounds the grill cloth. I have found some that is the correct width but the T slot is too narrow. I may have to use it anyway if that's all I can find. I can always glue it it.
There is also a U-shaped, soft plastic, edge molding around the outer edge of the cabinet. I haven't been able to find that particular one either and it is in pretty bad shape. I'll post some photos of it later to see if anyone here has a source.
Before any of that is done I need to put new Tolex on the cabinet. I know I can find that.

Yeah, that Salt-n-pepper cloth is tough to find. Sometimes you’ll find where someone has parted out an old ‘70s Marshall 4x12 and they list the grille cloth.
In my Marshall wanderings I’ll keep you in mind.

Hopefully this will quiet the mechanical noise a bit. I hope it's not worn pulleys. I don't know if it's replaceable or not but the noise is coming from the drive pulley on the motor. I hope replacing the belt fixes it.

We had one of those big black stage" Leslies for our guitarist back in the early '70s. The fancy wood-cased Leslies we called "furniture" Leslies. It replaced a problematic Roto-Vibe His guitar playing kept blowing the doggone horns. So ultimately he replaced it with an MXR Phase 90. That wasn't in the same neighborhood to my ears.
His youngest daughter is named Leslie--after the speaker.

I replaced the belt today and that took care of the mechanical noise it was making. While I was at it I took the back off and blew all the dust from the motors. I adjusted the slow motor on the top rotor because it would stop occasionally. I checked and tightened up any and all the electrical connections in the unit. I adjusted the belt tension on the lower rotor. It was a little loose. I also tightened up all of the loose screws that were holding the thing together. This thing sounds great other than the 60Hz hum that the motors radiate throughout the cabinet. All Leslies do that. That's why they need to be turned up loud so they can overcome all the inherent noises they make.
