So after contemplating getting an SG , upon being enabled by the people on this site , I finally pulled the trigger on a 61 Standard from Sweetwater. The fine people at Sweetwater . It came 2 days ago so I spent a little time with it before I reviewed it . The guitar came to me exactly as the pictured represented . The fretboard is nice and dark. The build quality is outstanding. I dont know if there has been a finer example of a Gibson. I had the chance to examine everything. The fretboard was somewhat dry, so I treated it with lemon oil and it brought it back to life. I ended up putting new strings on it . I ended up lowering the action, flattening out the relief and raising the tailpiece as the factory setup was a tad bit high for me . Not bad , just not to my liking , which is to be expected.
The fretwork was superb and once I dialed everything I plugged it into the DRRI I have . Clean it sounds pretty amazing.Naybe not as refined as my LP, but still very musical and pleasant . The 61 burstbuckers sound very nice. The neck pickup sounds nice and rounded , to some maybe a bit sassy, but its easy to dial in some nice tones. You can get nice bluesy tones with it without any trouble. The bridge pickup has plenty of bite. I adjusted it a tad bit higher than the factory setup came. Something like 1/16 of an inch. It roars Hit the tubescreamer and the sustain is crazy good.
Plugged it into my Marshall DSL 40C with stock speaker and you get total Rock tones . Easy to dial in some ACDCish tones . All in all a very veratile guitar that gets passed over alot when talking about Gibsons.
My search for a lightweight guitar kind of lead me to this . With degenerative disc disease I wanted something lightweight . This guitar weighs a few ounces over 6 and are lighter than my strats. Some people complain about neck dive and this guitar feels very stable and none of that going on.The slim taper to me feels very comfortable. Not pencil thin , just right to my hands. It doesnt have any of the nut binding ive had in the past with brand new Gibsons . The nut work is fantastic . This is a great guitar . One that will get played alot . Count me a very happy customer.
