Back in late March after the pandemic shutdown took hold, a couple of friends from my local Open Mics and I decided to continue the O/M on FB with a tune per day until the quarantine was lifted. Then a couple of friends from the London O/M's I play when over there also chimed in with their tunes. It's been fun!
Per the O/M rules, it's "first take only" every time. That means "clams and all", just like at a real O/M. Most of us, including me, just sing into our iPhones and post it as is.
Back in my solo gigging days I could play 4 hrs nonstop with no setlist and no repeats. Just the way my mind works, I guess. So I wasn't surprised that I could do 80+ songs and I was pretty darn sure that would be enough to get me through the quarantine period. Sadly, I was wrong...
SO... tomorrow is song post #100 for me and I have about a half dozen to go after that before my quiver is empty.
And... if California is any indication, the virus situation is worse than ever thanks mainly to selfish folks not practicing the things that need to be practiced. I know three folks who got COVID-19. Two ended up on respirators and barely survived and the third person died while on a respirator. All of these folks were in top physical condition before they got nailed with the virus. Further, a Canadian friend died because he couldn't get surgery for a problem not related to the virus. The doctors were too overwhelmed with virus cases to treat him. He left behind his wife and two young daughters.
I'm curious as to what others folks are doing out there to "keep music alive" during the pandemic.
Stay safe folks!

Sorry about your friends.
I feel like the musical soul has left my body and I'm left with an occasional involuntary twitch when looking at my guitars. My passion has always been writing and recording music but I can't get past a "what's the point?" mindset at this moment in history. Glad for those who still can find joy through their musical endeavors.

I can't get past a "what's the point? I think things like this happen occasionally at various moments in time. Though we may not understand our own altered states at times, the big picture has yet to present itself. Either your inspiration will return to you at the proper moment--and with added passion--or it'll move you on to another endeavor from which you'll experience satisfying fulfillment. That's my guess.

Firstly, sorry to hear about your friends 6. Secondly, congratulations and huge respect on your 100 songs "I can't get past a "what's the point?" " . That's pretty much how I've been feeling, but...………….. A couple of months ago Mrs Ayns posted first take, "clams and all" versions of me doing "May You Never" by John Martyn and "Fire and Rain" by James Taylor on FB. These are the only songs I've ever posted on FB Apparently they got a few "likes" but I've never watched them myself Band-wise, all gigs have been cancelled, but we are hoping to go out as an outdoor venue acoustic 5 piece if the opportunities arise

Cool Ayns!
I've been enjoying the pandemic solo performances of Paul Simon and Mary Chapin Carpenter on FB. James Taylor has put up a few too and, of course, Neil Young has put up the most.
Anything to help pass the time!

Those posts by Mary Chapin Carpenter have been outstanding! Such a charming woman, and such great tunes. Myself, my inspiration is gone. I kept myself tuned up so I could hopefully not suck at the local open mic. But that bar shut down with the pandemic, and now it might not ever open up the way it was because the owners are divorcing. Too bad, it was a great bar with a nice stage and a good soundman. Pretty good food, too.
Hey, 6, would you be willing to tell me where/how to find you on FB? I'd like to listen to your tunes.

I have been dropping some rather serious coin at the local music shop(s)... And remastering some early 80s originals . ..

Glad for those who still can find joy through their musical endeavors. I'm sorry to hear that Larry. I can relate. I haven't written anything of merit in the last 5 years. I have done some mixing projects on some old band songs I transferred from tape to digital. Other than that....nothing. I still have some more transfers to do so there will be more mixing projects if the tapes are in good enough shape to transfer. I still play and practice my guitar though. I just started up again after taking a couple months off to re-build my recording setup. I'm just about done with it. Just need to tidy up some of the wiring mess and I'll call it good. It was a good time to take a break from playing. I developed a bad pain in my left wrist after playing for awhile and I wanted to give it a break to see if it would go away. It didn't but it's not as bad as it was. I just need to stop the marathons. Since I have retired I want to write and record more songs. My recording setup was very compromised before but not anymore. Hopefully the muse hasn't left me. As far as the, "What's the point," for me, the point is to have fun doing it. I have never in my life had the opportunity to spend extended periods of time on it uninterrupted. Now I do so I need to take advantage of it while my hands are still working. I might even start playing more keyboards to see if I can get that back. Haven't done much of that in decades. I was never real good at it but I could do it. Not so much anymore.
