This is probably why a lot of athletes struggle after their careers are over - they don`t know how to do anything else and weren`t prepared (or encouraged to prepare) for this inevitability. If an athlete is able to bank a half billion simoleons by playing a game I don't understand how they could put themselves in a position to "struggle" after they retire. Financially, they shouldn`t. But Vince Youngs happened before he was born and will continue to happen. Thanks, Human Condition. Psychologically, some of them never seem to realize there is more to life than sports.

The guy is a new superstar. I just wonder what it will do for the rest of the players salaries. Will the Chiefs be able to afford any more top-tier players because of Mahommes contract?

I doubt I ever drive 3 hours to then 3 hours from KC to attend a game at Arrowhead. $20 might get you parking within a mile. KC is however a regional team pulling its fan base in from several states. My old boss has bought 8 season tickets for years and flies to games in his Super KingAir. The stadium holds 70,000 and it is often sold out. They could raise ticket prices and most fans wouldn’t even blink. I personally like the view from my recliner! All games are broadcast.

The Chiefs aren't run by idiots, I'm sure they considered that. Besides, many top-tier players have shown that they're willing to take a lower salary to play with a championship-caliber quarterback. What's more appealing to a player; play for the Browns and never make the playoffs, but make a few extra million, or play with Mahomes (or Brady, or Rogers, or Brees) and have a chance at winning a ring?

Money. Money will win over championships.
As for the Chiefs fan base thing, everything has limits.

I know ZIP about the income streams of teams but if a lot comes from ticket sales, I highly doubt that any stadiums are going to be full any time soon. That ought to make the argument that "player A puts butts in the seats so he deserves a big payday" a non starter, for the foreseeable future. Of course, this is coming from someone, who thinks that that "best seat in the house", for a sports game, is right in front of the T.V. lol

They were well aware of that fact and made the deal anyway.

The problem w a contract like that is there's a salary cap in the NFL so it limits a team from being able to sign good free agents. You can wind up w superstar QB and not much else for a team.

It seems that in the recent past, the Saints' record varied inversely with the amount of Drew Brees's latest contract. (I may have to verify this.)

It may just be me and I may be way off base, but does Mr. Mahomes ring somewhat of Mr. Starr? I’m not talking a player to player comparison, but that total package of who we like our athletes to be.

Mahomes was an Academic All American @ Texas Tech. He’s a very bright kid that has been heavily involved in all the negotiations since the day he got drafted. And KC has been preparing for this contract for 3 years. They moved out several high profile, expensive players to create the space needed. Mahomes has 22 of 24 starters back this season and had a nice draft for support cast. KC is better prepared for a SB this year than they were last year IMO.

And KC has been preparing for this contract for 3 years. Proof? KC is better prepared for a SB this year than they were last year IMO. This has probably been said every year since 1970 and was correct once.

Nobody is worth that price! Stupid ownership will now cause all of the mediocre players to seek new contracts. You're looking at it from a fan perspective, from a "no one should get paid that much to play a game" perspective. And, I agree with you in that regard. But, you have look at it from a business perspective. How much increased revenue has he generated for the franchise? Do you think they would've gone to the Super Bowl without him? What do you think winning a Super Bowl does for revenue? If they're going pay him that much, it's because they think he will generate three times that much revenue for them.

The first time I really watched Mahomes play was Chiefs v Texans last year in the divisional. Then watched the Titans game and the SB.
I'm a fan (even though he beat TN).
Each game was like a master-class of quarterback play.
Being a QB takes waaaay more skill and dedication/time than what I do for sure..
No problem with him being (or any other athlete) being paid whatever amount. It's the way our system works..

What do you think winning a Super Bowl does for revenue? Given the way Chiefs fans tend to be, that money was coming in anyway. I don`t think a major uptick is going to happen from where they were at anyway. If they're going pay him that much, it's because they think he will generate three times that much revenue for them. They better hope that happens. No one knows the future.

And Jim Ringo was athletic enough to play center in the NFL. In fact, the first time I heard the name "Ringo Starr" I thought of Jim Ringo and Bart Starr.
