Founding fathers for me, worthy of getting their kissers carved in granite on a mountaintop somewhere.
Chuck Berry
Little Richard
Elvis
Buddy Holly.
I was too young at the time to experience the impact of these guys (and others) when they emerged on the scene, unleashed on an unsuspecting Giselle MacKenzie Patti Page world.
But it must have been marvelous.

Bob Dylan once said that there should be statues of the Beatles on every street corner 'cause they gave America it's music back. I'm down with the mountain, maybe add Eddie Cochran in there somewhere.

I tend to want to see Carl Perkins up there instead of Holly, but I think that you probably called it right with the founders of Rock and Roll. No question about the first three.

Andrew Loog Oldham has a memoir, kind of obscure, in which he talks about growing up in post-war Britain, the music scene waaaay back when, and how black GIs and their records available really pretty much only through PXs initially, introduced his contemporaries to all that great r&b and soul music. He does talk about going to see Haley who came to Britain after Rock Around the Clock, and how the expectation when he saw the guy on stage was not fulfilled.

I'd go with Jimmy's first 3 picks but would have to hold a runoff election between Holly and Cochran for the forth slot: tough call, that one.
An urban blues Rushmore would be easier for me: Muddy, Wolf, Little Walter and Sonny Boy Williamson II. Too many runners-up to mention: T-Bone Walker, the 3 Kings, Otis Rush, Robert Jr. Lockwood, Hubert Sumlin, Shaky Walter Horton, Elmore James, Bobby Bland, John Lee Hooker, Earl Hooker, Buddy Guy, Junior Wells, Slim Harpo, John Brim, etc., etc., etc....

^^^If you're looking for runners-up on the blues side, please don't overlook Sister Rosetta Tharp who was a personal favorite of Elvis. And AFAIC, BB King belongs on the rock along with Muddy, Wolf and John Lee Hooker (who was best man at an old friend's wedding). But that's a discussion that could go on for days.

Yeah, BB for sure, Mississippi John Hurt? Maybe not really rock, but man.. If you're going way down the alley, I'd pick Lightnin' Hopkins over John Hurt -- this is an exercise in curation as much as anything else.

I think most of us would agree with JimmySee's first three picks. That fourth one might be a point of contention. But I think Buddy Holly would certainly be a leading candidate (if not THE leading candidate) for the fourth.

May I suggest that Mount Rushmore is not a monument to founding fathers? Historically it runs from 1732-1919. That’s the year of birth of Washington and the year of death of Teddy.
Birth, growth, development, and preservation apparently.
I’m Scottish, what do I know? It may be more interesting to choose four artists that can represent those four stages.
And don’t be too USA-centric. 😀

Great thread. Got to go with Chuck Berry for sure. I think Buddy Holly should be included for the simple fact he made the self contained band and looking sort of nerdy cool.
I will take Bo Diddley as my third. His influence was huge. For my forth give me Jimi Hendrix.

Jimmy's list in the first post is good. Buddy Holly wrote his own songs. Of the four in that list, only Elvis was not a singer-songwriter. When Jimmy mentioned Giselle McKenzie, I envisioned her, Dorothy Collins, Russell Arms, and Snookie Lanson from Your Hit Parade on Mt. Rushmore. I suspect rock and roll more or less put an end to that weekly TV show.

I'm not really sure what Bob Dylan meant by that. Was there a time when rock was dead in the late fifties, early sixties?

Well, the music of 1963 was relatively boring and unenergetic, for the most part. At least compared to 1964.
