I was looking for an all wood Guitar for under 1,000. MF had a d- custom for 999.00 that was plain jane, but all wood long story short the sale was over before i could buy,i ask a day later if they could do the same deal he said no but i ask if he could do any thing on a d-16gt he said 1279.00 (no taxes in tex) so bought thinking if it was a dud i would send it back as i knew it was a 50% chance of getting a good one I had early 90s D-16gtsb and always loved the guitar. Happy to say i love the beautiful spruce top slightly flamed top and solid mahogany body It does not like elixir, but does like Daddario and martin strings. Iv had the guitar for a year and still love. I was Just wandering if any one has any experience or what they thought about the 16 series.

I have owned three 16 Series Guitars.
A very rare SPD 16 Mahogany dread with an ebony fingerboard and bridge which I purchased new. . Fantastic guitar until the bridge snapped and flew off 30 days after purchase. Then only to find out that the dealer had the guitar for a year and during that time is was sent back for a neck re-set.. I was not told this until the event and I contacted them.. they would not help me nor intervene with Martin.. and left it up to me to get this handled. This was first Martin had ever done a reset on a new wage D-1 bracing system. Difficult considering the laminated stack of alder laminates in the neck block rather solid mahogany. When fixed, I offed it and lost considerable money. Sold because the guitar was not the same and unsightly repair.
Next I bought a used but mint 1992 D-16H.. the early ones with a dovetail neck joint, forward shifted scalloped braces and a satin finish, and Herringbone purfling. . Fantastic guitar. Went broke sold it and the owner still has it and still plays it professionally and looks and sounds great.. These are rare. Now finally discovered and the prices are rising for clean examples. Not to be confused with the D-16s with bolt on necks and D-1 style bracing.
000 16S GT... The original with ebony bits and Waverley tuners (before CFM IV lowered the quality and fitted Richlite fingerboards and bridges and cheap Chinese tuners and raised the price 30% over the original price) This was an excellent guitar and I regret selling it.

I had this exact same guitar. I put Mammoth Ivory pegs and bought another bone bridge saddle (in the event I messed it up I could put the original back on) and carefully shaved some off the bottom to lower the action by laying a fine tooth file and slid the saddle back and forth across it while laying flat. Worked well and remained flat and straight on the bottom. Sounded and played great. The pickup and control system very good high quality at least on the one I bought around mid to late 2000’s. Anti feedback control was a big plus. Scalloped bracing lended a big tone with 11’s on it. My one and only issue With it was one day it sounded beautiful and the next like a wet rag draped over the top due to Humidity change. All and all great guitar. Maybe If I had experimented a bit more I could have found ways to make it more consistent. I realize lowering humidity but I thought, wow..that works for playing indoors but what about outside.

I have an OM16GT that I bought new in 2001 (pre-micarta) for about $700. It's a great guitar.

D16GT here. (With micarta). About $600(ish) 10yrs or so ago. Great sound, no problems. I did install a K&K pure western mini pickup as well.

Mine's a 12-string, jumbo body - a J-12-16GT (gloss top). Love it; warm balanced tone, and the pickup works fine.

I have a 000C-16GTE I bought new in 2001 or so. Bought more for the style and cutaway than anything. I like its spartan appointments and light, responsive feel. I'm looking for a good quality dread these days, and I'm interested in the 16 and 17 series as a cheaper alternative to a D18. Any opinions or comparisons on that?

You should be able to find a used post-2012 (reimagined) D-18 in near perfect condition for $1,400-1,500 - I'd do that. Dovetail neck joint and other Standard Series appointments...you'll want one later if you don't.
