With nothing really to do because of COVID, we decided to go to the drive through Safari at Six Flags.
When we got to the giraffe part, three of those troublemaking tall boys were standing right in the middle of the road, completely obstructing traffic. Dead stop.
Out of nowhere, two trucks with zebra stripes pull up looking to herd them out of the road. Well, they knew exactly what was coming. The drivers opened the window and flipped handfuls of Purina Giraffe Chow onto the roof of the vehicle and slowly started driving away. They happily ate their snack while walking alongside the vehicle, and soon enough, order was restored.
Pretty cool to drive through all of those cool animals in the middle of New Jersey. And, COVID safe because we never left our car. Even when we scanned our tickets, they had us leave the windows up and scanned them right through the glass.

Odd times, these, when the sight of two naked giraffes stirs no moral outrage. At least in New Jersey.

Click on this link. There are giraffesMike, at least you get to drive your own car through the area. Near me is the Global Wildlife Center, Folsom, Louisiana. You get in a large wagon pulled by truck and ride through the area. Because of the virus, there is limited seating and a lot of the tours for next week are sold out.

Giraffes are fascinating critters. Like a giant long-neck camel with no shoulders and zero regard for traffic laws!

No giraffes here today, but I was very happy to see a red squirrel this morning as I drove home. Our native reds have been pushed further and further north by the bigger greys. We're not far from the Scottish border but it's good to know there are still reds in England

Here in Louisiana, the gray cat squirrels that live in the southeastern part of the state are smaller than the red fox squirrels iof north Louisiana. I have seen red squirrels in Thibodaux, in south Louisiana Cajun land.

OK...while we're on the subject of wildlife...
Yesterday I as out working in the pastures. I was taking a break sitting quietly at the end of a forested hill that separates the two valleys of the ranch--pasture on each side of the hill. I'm sitting super still and just surveying what's in front of me. Then I hear something running behind me. I turn my head over my shoulder to see what's coming. I see a mature deer running full-tilt down the east side of the hill towards the pasture--25 yds. behind it is a coyote also running fult-tilt after the deer. They both are just pedal-to-the-metal, hauling butt. They turn down the pasture and just keep hammering. I can't believe what I'm watching. They cross one of the streams and just keep going. Eventually they are over a 1/4 mile away and the deer cuts it up the west side of the east side hill into the forest over there. Same deal...the coyote in hot pursuit. They disappear into the forest and that's the last I see of them. Certainly don't know how it turned out. But it was a mind-blower piece of entertainment for the 30 seconds or so they came whizzing by. Not sure why the coyote was working so hard for prey when the pastures are filled with all kinds of rodents--chipmunks, rabbits, etc., that are much easier for them to catch. Maybe they were just playing? Never even seen them mess with newborn calves. They seem to ignore the cattle completely.
