OK, after stopping for take-away lunch today, I affirm my earlier declaration that the award for best sub sandwich from a national chain goes to Jersey Mike's. Today, my favorite, #13, the Original Italian, a Jersey shore special, on a whole wheat roll, Mike's way. With all the add-ons, and both banana and jalapeño peppers. And mayo along with the oil and vinegar. Mask-on in the shop, maintaining social distancing, tapped credit card to pay, took the sandwich home for lunch. Extra yum. www.jerseymikes.com/menu/cold-subs/13-the-original-italian?fbclid=IwAR0oaXX7PwwY3zgU-JBJuuXFQonEMZmPqDlizE11uTkIfZlBFFPDIFM0eW4

They opened one up by me back in Florida and I was totally unimpressed. Probably the management. Honestly the best sub I've ever had from a chain was Quizos. Again, all depends on who's running the joint.

The quality of the roll, the right mixture of oil and the spices, and slicing all the cold cuts to order makes the difference.

As far as chains go, Jersey Mike's is probably my second favorite. Can't go wrong with a #2, Mike's Way. My top award, though, goes to Togo's.

I don’t frequent these type places. Here in Staten Island, there’s a real deal deli every few blocks on any main road where you can get freshly sliced meats and cheeses on a virety of breads with a variety of toppings.
I have tried them, of course, and Quizno’s was my favorite. Never tried Jersey Mike’s.

Doesn't Togo's and Quizno's toast their sandwiches? My own faves are cold subs with oil and vinegar dressing.

Much like Fitz -- here in New England, you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a real independent sub shop. If I want a Steak, Mushroom, and Cheese -- it's one place. Another is good at Italians. Yet another is good with meatball. Given this, I would never bother with a national chain.
Back when I traveled a lot and I didn't have time to look for real food, I'd hit a Subway shop. The best I can say is that they were consistently edible.

^ As you were saying that, I was listing off the places in my head that are the go-to place for each type around me. And I had a place for each one you mentioned.

I like JM.
Mostly because there are no dead cats swinging around them.

Miss the sub shops in ny. In the small town where I grew up most neighborhood stores were also either a sub shop, meat market or pizza place. That being said I do like Jersey Mikes. We also have a couple of DiBellas here too as well as a Firehouse Subs and both rival Jersey Mikes. Definitely miss Quiznos though.

Gotta say, that sounds delicious Jimmy. I could eat one right now.
Not a big fan of Subway over here. They're OK, but nothing special. Better than McDonalds I suppose.

I won't eat anything from Subway, but I like JM's. Not the best ever but often the best at hand.

Agreed, they are the best of the chain shops. The nearest to me is in Denver, about 120 miles away. But they are right next to Applejack, the finest liquor store on the planet. So I hit one, and then the other.
I think it's the #9 that I like.

I spend so much at the liquor store ... I can't afford a sandwich ...
Poor budgeting on my part ...

When we're in Bristol (UK - it's been like six months a year for the last six years or so), there's a Subway shop a few blocks from our flat, but it is reserved for desperation only, and my wife will not set foot in the door.

We had one in the mall back when I worked retail and we used to get lunch there sometimes. They offered a combo with a sandwich, chips, drink and a candy bar for a low price.

Here in Western NY (Buffalo / Niagara Falls area), every pizza joint (and we have thousands of them) has subs. No chain, unless it originated from here has been able to make it. When you order out around here, it's either pizza and wings or subs. Nothing beats a Buffalo chicken finger sub with blue cheese!

Doesn't Togo's and Quizno's toast their sandwiches? My own faves are cold subs with oil and vinegar dressing. I think they give you the option of toasting your sandwich. I generally prefer a cold sandwich, myself. There are plenty of good delis in LA too, but when you need a quick bite and feel like a sandwich JM's or Togo's are a decent bet.

Closest thing to a deli I gave seen in Charlotte is McCallisters. This just in, McCallisters is NOT a deli. Chain sub shops leave a lot to be desired. I still miss Ohle's in Denver. Now if i want a good sub I make it.

Agree, Jersey Mike's is the best from a chain. Won't walk into a Subway, yuck.

Only been to a couple independent shops -- there was an Italian deli in Santa Monica on Lincoln Blvd (8th Street) that had a sandwich called the Godmother, highly regarded, and an Italian grocery in Milwaukee, I believe it is called Gloriosos's, on Brady Street on the east side, famous for its Milwaukee Muffaletta sandwich. Both good, but Jersey Mike's is competitive, consistently good, and nearly always reasonably close any hand. But got a tip on another local shop, this only three blocks or so from home. Got to try 'em. fromagination.com/product/great-wisconsin-sandwich/

Subway stinks.

JM slices their meats as you watch, so like a deli.
They are the best "national" chain.
