JM slices their meats as you watch, so like a deli. They are the best "national" chain. That already puts them at the top of my list and I’ve never eaten there. Only one location on Staten Island and last time I was by there, it looked closed. Ask them about the fingertip special.

We don’t talk about what happens with the deli slicer on Staten Island.

I used to work at a sub shop. We sliced the meat and cheese fresh as we made the sandwiches. Bread was baked fresh on sure add well. Great sandwiches.
I've never seen a jersey mikes, so I can't comment on them. For chains around here, I prefer Milio's, but I prefer the small delis. There are a couple that make a great sandwich around here.

JM bakes its own bread and roast beef daily in the store. They are a bit on the pricy side but consistently good. I've got one 10 min from the house and will go there about once a month. I like the Italian and club sub.
Pretty sure if I was on Stanton Island I steer clear of them. But here in flyover country, nothing better.

We have Milio's in Madison -- they're actually closer, way closer than Jersey Mike's, so at least until last autumn I could take my bicycle up there for lunch. These days, I am not eating in, have not been back to Milios lately, but maybe should do so. For me, Milios is a solid #2 to Jersey Mikes. THX for reminding me.

This thread is making me really want a good Italian hero. Might have to make that happen.

Jersey Mike's is pretty good stuff.
My wife complained that there are no Jersey Mike's in Philly I suspect because they are called hoagies in Philly.

Public's uses Boars Head. That's the best lunch meat around. They win.

But Jersey Mike's is one of the few places that will pour on the "juice" (red wine vinegar and olive oil) which along with a shake of oregano, just makes an Italian sub. I have to watch them being made as some will skimp, and I want it really wetted down.

My favorite chain is Potbelly’s. Quality ingredients and they don’t try to up sell you every five seconds.
For standalone places, Bay Cities in Santa Monica (referenced by Jimmy) is excellent. In my hometown we have an Italian deli that makes a prosciutto, marinated eggplant and provolone sandwich so good that you’ll post about it here.

Never heard of Potbelly's, JM does not up-sell anything, except they do ask if you want a drink and chips at checkout.
Looking at my Maps app there is a Potbelly fairly close. Looking at their menu it looks like they have a very large menu to be great at Subs, and most are toasted.
I do see they have a special edition BLT I might try.

I may be wrong but I've yet to see a chain shop that uses real olive oil From their website Red wine vinegar and an olive oil blend. So under truth in advertising law it should at least be real olive oil.

"Blend" means its not real olive oil. Its olive oil and "other stuff".

"Blend" means its not real olive oil. Its olive oil and "other stuff". Yeah, it's probably 75% vegetable oil 25% light olive oil . Whenever I get a hoagie I order it dry and put some quality evoo on when I get home. trust me it makes the sammich. --------------------------------------------------------------- Your response got entangled in the quote box, so I fixed it.
