Have been thinking of getting a new tele (Am Pro), but want to replace the 'comes with' 8-hole guard with a vintage-look 5 hole, but apparently its not a direct replacement? I had thought the 8 hole was just the same 5 hole pattern with 3 more screws added. Am I wrong? And if so, does anyone if I'd need to drill a bunch of new holes and potentially make a mess of things? Thanks

No, it's not a direct fit. The good news is the replacement guard will cover all existing holes, so even if you have to drill new holes for the new 'guard, it will still look perfect once the guard's on.
Don't lose any sleep about drilling into a guitar for a mod like this.
If you're concerned about devaluing the guitar, it's too late because you've "driven it off the lot" (playing the thing is already knocking the value off).

What is more likely to annoy you in replacing the guard is whether or not it has holes for the neck pickup screws. An old style guard (usually) won't have holes to hang the pickup off the guard, as they were body mounted and a modern style Tele (usually) will have the pickup hanging from the guard.
Drilling some holes for a pickup isn't all that difficult, but it is a couple steps of skill level above pickguard holes, so it might be something to consider before buying a guard.

I have a Nashville Tele I converted to a conventional 2 pup Tele. The Fender 5 hole guard lined up perfectly with 5 of the 8 holes. I did have to remove a bit of guard where it fits the control plate, but no biggie on that. Used a dowel wrapped in sandpaper. I might have gotten lucky on the holes.
