I'd posted in the FDP about my new (used) Maz 18 and how any dirt pedal would kill the cleans even at the lowest gain settings. I suspected a bad cable or power supply, but I decided to test different tubes. I replaced the JJ ECC83S preamp tube in V1 with a spare and, boom, the amp came to life like it had a couple of defib paddles used on it. The cleans are wunnerful now and there is more character.
Since I have no idea how old are these tubes, I'm going to do a complete tube swap. I can't wait to see if there are more great tones hiding in new tubes.

Be careful of changing too many things at once.

Mmmmmmm...... Tube sniffing!
I have a small collection of tubes I’ve swapped out of a few amps. Problem is that about half of those tubes are orphans because I sold the amps they came out of. Maybe we could start an “Orphan Vacuum Tube” thread. 🤔

leftymeister, have you tried Tung Sol 12Ax7A’s I haven’t used them in a guitar amp as mine is a solid state Fender Ultimate Chorus made in 1991 but they made for a very nice tone with kicking low end on my Genz Benz Streamliner bass amp

LtB, actually, they come highly-regarded for V1 and V2 in the Maz 18.
