I received this email from AT&T today. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Larry,
We will soon be upgrading our network to use the latest technologies. These updates are to serve you better and bring faster speeds and greater reliability.
But your device ending in *6080 is not compatible with the new network and you need to replace it to continue receiving service. Our team is here to help you find a compatible device that fits your needs. We want to help you transition as seamlessly as possible and ensure your service is not interrupted.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It appears my beloved iPhone 4 is doomed.
I have become so attached to it since its introduction in June of 2010. I actually did not realize we had a decade long history together.
This is going to be a rough time for me.
Please excuse my blubbering and blowing snot all over the bar here, could someone pass me the tissues.

My days are numbered as well.
Look at my calendar if you doubt it.

I saw something about this. I can't find it right now. The cell network change mentioned is not going into effect until Feb 2022, IIRC, so you still have about 18 months of continued bliss with your beloved old phone.
The article also mentioned that the message in question could possibly be a scam or hoax. They were trying to verify with AT&T that it is an official, bonafide message.

I had the i4 when I upgraded to the i9. I still keep the 4 charged up because it has such a great camera.
And I look at that little screen and wonder how in the hinky hell I ever was able to type text messages on it or even read the bastidz.

I had an iPhone 5 that I used when we traveled internationally. There were some apps that could not be updated. Eventually I threw in the towel and upgraded to an iPhone 10r because of its extended battery capability and it could hold two SIM cards (one virtual), for both my US and UK service. If you're interested, Apple sells refurb phones, so you can save a few hundred bucks. Amazon also sells third party refurbs, though if you go too far back in which model you purchase, you'll hit the same problem again sooner. Technical obsolescence is an issue in any computer product. You've done pretty well with that phone.

^ You can also get an outdated model brand new. I was looking at an 11 and instead went with an XR for about half the price, brand new.
Generally speaking I don’t like the idea of buying outdated tech, but I do make an exception for iPhones. They are just so damn expensive and the days of carriers heavily discounting them for existing accounts are long gone.

I do have admit, I can run the battery dead on this old iPhone 4 pretty quickly when it is put to heavy use.
If I have nearly 2 years to make a transition I'll probably be able to control my emotions as I find a way to bond with a new future.
Honestly the thing I like best and that held me back from moving to anything newer is the size of the phone. I wear it on my belt and a bigger phone might seem like one one those battleships Peegoo was talking about ... On my hip. 😪

If you like the button at the bottom of the screen, the 8 is the last to offer that.
Otherwise you’re swipey-flicking.

You're bigger issue may be finding a belt clip carrier for a newer phone!

Although if you are still open carrying it on your belt, I can see the concern (although my dad wears his 6+ that way).

Man, that thing owes you nothing! I had to upgrade away from a six because the audio on both directions was so bad it was useless for actual phone calls (kinda important), and the updates had bogged down the phone so much the hardware had a hard time keeping up. Some iPhone versions are these amazing things that have a lot of life, other versions not so much. Some people got years out of their 5s, but my 6 was pretty unremarkable. I got a Xs last Christmas, and it is streets ahead of what the 6 was on day one. I have a feeling the Xr and Xs will be another set of those bench mark versions that work really well. But hey, what do I know?
Regarding Xs vs. Xr, I don't remember the differences, but I do remember that Verizon was running a special and the Xs and Xr were the same price right to the penny, so I went with the Xs since it was supposedly the better phone. I'm not sure if I would have cared to go for the Xs over the Xr if there was a price difference.
Regarding size, my co-worker was looking at my Xs and commented that he didn't want such a big phone, but when I put it next to his 6s the outer dimensions were identical. It just looks much larger because the screen extends so far to the edge. I've heard similar comments from a few other people about how big it is, but it is an optical illusion. Check out those phone kiosks at your local retailer and hold your phone up next to the display models, and I think you'll find the same to be true. I'm sure most are larger than the 4 at this point, but it probably isn't as much as you think.

I don't have a smart phone. My RJ11 extension cord reaches into the back yard so I'm good.

I bit the bullet and upgraded from a 6S to an 11 Pro. Cannot believe how GREAT the camera is in the 11 Pro!
Soon as you can, go get one and prepare to smile a lot.

I keep it in my pocket for stuff like this, when having my phone in my pocket may not be a good decision: I’m surprised, seems like every time a new one comes out, a better camera is supposed to be part of the deal. I would’ve thought from 4 to 9 there would have been at least some improvement.

The camera on my 6 was a noticeable downgrade from the cheap Motorola I had before it. What Peegoo has there is definitely better than anything my 6 could have done.

We had a iPhone 4 (maybe 5, can't remember) that currently has around 90 albums recorded on it and is plugged into the radio in one of our cars. I used it to replace XM radio and we're very happy with the results.
