Also, I used to play full Marshall stacks in the ‘70’s/ ‘80’s , usually on about 2-2.5. I don’t think I ever got above 3.
In the early ‘90’s i was playing a Marshall JCM 900 half stack at a local bar. At the break, the sound man said “you’re the loudest guitarist I’ve ever heard”. I grinned back at him and he added “it’s not a compliment!” :-)

You want loud? I got loud right here. I was lucky enough to be able to crank the gain because this is in a warehouse district where you can go wild. That's a 65 Pro Reverb on about 5.

This thread makes me think of all the times I’d be bringing equipment in to a wedding/family gig and there would be a bunch of “senior citizens” parked at a table close to the band who would start commenting about how loud we were going to be without hearing us play a note.

Hah, ain't that the truth. I remember playing countless country clubs where the old folks would inadvertently be seated in front of the band. "You boys look loud. Are you loud??" The organizers would always tell us not to worry too much because they usually leave early anyway. One time I remember they whined so much we played (as our keyboard player defined) "sarcastically quiet". We would do our material that best suited the situation. The lead vocalist literally sang Unchained Melody without his mic while laughing at a particular geezer grousing "Why don't you boys turn those amplifiers right off!" By the 2nd set we were usually rockin' after the doctors and lawyers became sufficiently inebriated.
